The latest report from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.17% (23.6 million) in Q3 2019 to total 1.112 billion. During the past year copper (ADSL etc.) based lines fell by 7.7% while almost every other technology, particularly FTTH and fixed wireless connectivity, grew.

Mobile operator giffgaff looks set to refresh several of their 4G mobile “goodybag” plans from 26th February 2020, which will see some data (mobile broadband) allowances being boosted and all of their tariffs – even the cheapest ones – gaining access to unlimited calls and texts. On the flip side, pay-as-you-go users will suffer a huge hike!

UK ISP Virgin Media has today completed an extension of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and TV network to cover 1,200 premises in the Northumberland town of Cramlington, which is home to around 30,000 people and resides just 9 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that the only two telecoms companies to have made it into the top table – mobile operators giffgaff and Tesco Mobile – have improved their ranking.

Ofcom has published their final Fairness Framework (guidelines) for UK providers of mobile, home phone, pay TV and fixed broadband ISPs, which have been designed to show consumers how the regulator will in future assess whether such providers, and the way they treat their customers, is fair (pricing, transparency, support etc.).

Fixed wireless and UK full fibre (FTTP) ISP Airband has made progress on their £11.2m Connecting Shropshire contract, which has so far expanded the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connectivity to 10,500 premises in the county and they now aim to deploy “ultrafast” (100Mbps) speeds to a further 2,200 premises.

The new UK Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Bill, which aims to make it significantly easier, quicker and cheaper for “gigabit-capable” broadband ISPs and telecoms firms to access big apartment blocks (MDU) where “rogue landlords” fail to respond, received broad support in yesterday’s 2nd reading.

Rural full fibre broadband ISP Gigaclear has today formally launched their new in-home Smart Wi-Fi “mesh solution” for customers, which harnesses the new Velop router from Linksys and makes it possible to easily extend the wireless network signal by adding a series of linked repeater nodes into the network.

Cityfibre’s £30m project to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across Southend-on-Sea, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk to follow later), has officially started to go live for new customers in the large Essex based town.

Openreach’s (BT) commercial roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Northern Ireland has grown its reach to more than 260,000 premises, which has helped the region to push overall “full fibre” coverage to over 35% (here) and they claim that 40% will be achieved by March 2020.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued its annual update on Ofcom’s progress toward tackling the “loyalty penalty” in UK broadband ISP and mobile services, which can result in existing customers paying “significantly more” than new ones. Overall the progress has been good, but not all operators are playing ball.

Libert Global is progressing their plans to launch a new “full fibre” broadband network – Liberty Networks – that will be independent of their existing Virgin Media brand in the United Kingdom. The cable giant has just put in a related application for Code Powers with Ofcom, which usually happens before a roll-out begins.

UK ISP Zzoomm, which has an ambition to cover 1 million homes with a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2025 (here), has today put its new service live for homes to join its network in the Oxfordshire town of Henley-on-Thames.

A new study from Cable.co.uk has examined 3,095 fixed broadband ISP packages from 206 countries to create a global pricing comparison, which reveals that the UK ranks just 71st cheapest overall with an average monthly cost of $35.71 (£27.45) and we drop to 82nd when ranked by average cost per megabit of speed ($1.07).

UK ISP TalkTalk has today confirmed that their wholesale full fibre (FTTH) broadband network sibling – FibreNation – has been sold to the Goldman Sachs backed Cityfibre for £200m cash. In response Cityfibre has increased their fibre optic roll-out plan from 5 million UK premises by 2025 to 8 million.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has proposed a new framework, which could see builders of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks working together in the final 20-30% of hardest to reach premises to maximise coverage, such as by avoiding overbuild in areas that can’t support multiple networks and sharing access.
