Alternative network ISP Ecom, which is deploying a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Buckinghamshire (England), has hit a snag after the developer of a new build homes site in Whitchurch appeared to shun their offer of a free “full fibre” build. Instead future owners may suffer slow ADSL.

The Gloucestershire and Herefordshire UK councils appear to be on the verge of agreeing a new £14m Broadband Strategy for their joint Fastershire project, which will run until the end of 2022 and aims to extend the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks into some of the most poorly served parts of both counties.

A few months ago a new ISP called Fidelity Broadband unveiled their plan to deploy a 1Gbps Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network to cover over 1 million UK premises “on-demand” (here). Now the same provider has revealed that they also intend to build a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network for homes and businesses.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate UK networks easier (e.g. BT to Hyperoptic) and they also intend to ban mobile operators from selling “locked” handsets (i.e. Smartphones that cannot be used on other networks unless they are unlocked).

New UK ISP Swish Fibre, which only recently entered the market (here), has been acquired by Fern Trading Ltd as part of a “long-term funding deal” that they say will enable them to unlock £250m of investment and begin their roll-out of a 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 premises (starting outside London).

A new UK ISP called Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets Ltd.) has today announced its presence to the industry and that comes alongside their goal of becoming Cambridgeshire’s “first open access full fibre broadband” operator, although strictly speaking Openreach (BT) and Cityfibre may have already taken that crown.

The Department for the Economy has issued a small update on their long-in-gestation £165m Project Stratum scheme, which after two consultations has finally confirmed that some 97,000 premises are eligible to be upgraded with a “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network under their future roll-out programme.

Some 8,500 premises in the large urban village of Cudworth (South Yorkshire) have become the latest to go live on Virgin Media’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and TV network, which at present can deliver average download speeds of 516Mbps and this will be upgraded to support 1Gbps in the near future.

The UK Government has today approved fibre optic connectivity provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) as a supplier under the Crown Commercial Service’s (CCS) RM6095 agreement, which means that they’re now eligible to provide public sector buyers with “Gigabit-capable” connectivity services.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre, which is currently in the process of investing £20m to build a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network that will reach around 60,000 premises in Cambridge via UK ISP partner Vodafone (here), appears to have put their network live with the first customers getting a connection.

Yesterday saw the Conservative party return to power after securing a large majority in the 2019 UK General Election. In response broadband ISPs have politely welcomed the “new” government but have called upon PM Boris Johnson to get on with the job of implementing his commitment to gigabit connectivity for all by 2025.

A new Savanata survey of 5,016 broadband customers by Which? has claimed that UK consumers can save an average of £120 a year by haggling with their ISP for a better deal, which could take the form of either a discount on your monthly rental or various other incentives in order to stop you switching.

The UK telecoms regulator has opened a second investigation into O2, which is examining whether or not the mobile operator provided “complete, accurate and on time” information to them as part of their on-going probe into an “Extraordinary Performance Failure” of the company’s metering and billing system.

UK ISP BT has announced that they will make their BTSport TV content available via a separate flexible monthly pass, which means that customers no longer have to bundle it in with the provider’s own broadband or another service in order to receive it. However such a pass will set you back £25 per month.
