The Scottish Government has awarded BT (Openreach) the final LOT 1 contract – as preferred bidder – to deliver their new £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) project, which originally (here) aspired to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premises in Scotland” by the end of 2021.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), which represents 200 broadband and other internet providers within the sector (many more than this number exist), has today warned of “deep flaws” within Labour’s new proposals for broadband (here) and said that the “entire telecoms sector” is echoing similar concerns.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today announced that its Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Mansoor Hanif (former BT director), is to leave after only joining the organisation last year (here). The regulator’s Group Director of Strategy and Research, Yih-Choung Teh, will hold his position until a replacement is found.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre, which is currently aiming to rollout a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 5 million UK premises across 60 cities and towns by the end of 2025 (here), has created the new role of Chief Delivery Officer (CDO) and appointed Richard Thorpe to fill it.

A new survey by broadband ISP Zen Internet has claimed that 9.1 million UK households don’t have access to WiFi throughout their homes and the provider believes that it’s the “responsibility of the broadband industry” to ensure this is delivered. As such they’ve launched their new EveryRoom guarantee (mesh network solution).

The independent Worcester-based fixed wireless and full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP, Airband, has announced a new recruitment drive after expanding their existing office space in Kirkham House by acquiring part of the upper floor of the building, which was formerly occupied by training provider CHS.

A new survey by UK estate agent Springbok Properties has examined the broadband ISP speeds across every constituency and how house prices in these areas corresponded, which among other things has revealed that people in Liverpool Walton come out on top (average speed of 61.2Mbps and an average house price of just £75,000).

The Liberal Democrats have today joined other parties by publishing their manifesto for the 2019 General Election (12th December), which includes a number of broadband and mobile connectivity commitments and promises a “programme of installing hyper-fast, fibre-optic broadband across the UK” – with a focus on rural areas.

Mobile operator O2 claims to be deploying the “fastest free stadium Wi-Fi in the UK” at the London Stadium, which forms part of a tie-up between their business division and networking giant Cisco. Unfortunately they haven’t provided any information on expected speeds or backhaul capacity to help backup their claims.

Broadband ISPs Met Technologies Limited (Met Plus Telecom and Millenium Talk) and Guaranteed Telecom Limited (Zoom Telecom) are being probed by Ofcom UK, which occurred after a number of consumers reported alleged incidents where their telecoms service had been switched without their permission.

The Green Party has this week published their Manifesto for the 2019 General Election and the Brexit Party doesn’t plan to do one, although in both cases we have at least been given a very rough indication of what to expect in terms of their internet connectivity and broadband policies.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which started its rollout in May 2019 (here), has now gone live in a further 14 UK cities and towns. Some of the biggest locations include Liverpool, Glasgow, Guildford, Maidstone, Watford and Wolverhampton.

The latest Q2 2019 consumer complaints report from Ofcom has confirmed that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most moans for fixed line broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media did the same for both Mobile and Pay TV. On the flip side Sky Broadband generated the fewest gripes.

A new survey of 208 small and medium sized UK enterprises, which was conducted during May 2019 by Consumer Intelligence on behalf of broadband ISP Onecom, has claimed that poor internet services cost them on average £3,351 each in lost business over the past 3 years (22% of SMEs estimate their losses at over £5,000 each).

Energy provider and UK ISP SSE has today become the latest provider to drop their older copper ADSL broadband packages, while at the same time they’ve made their two “unlimited fibre” (FTTC) and phone bundles a little bit cheaper for new customers – just in time for the Black Friday sales event.

New data from internet speed testing giant Ookla (Speedtest.net) has shown how well early 5G mobile networks – including EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 – are performing across England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland. Overall the new mobile broadband tech is more than 450% faster than older ones, albeit not as impressive for uploads.

RootMetrics has just published their third report into the tentative early availability and mobile broadband performance of UK 5G Mobile networks, which this time focuses upon the UK capital city of London. As before EE came top for both average download speeds (149.2Mbps) and network availability (60.6%).
