Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has welcomed expectations that the current UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will today announce plans to prioritise mobile coverage, particularly in rural areas. The operator expects that the move will support the industry-led plan for a new Shared Rural Network (SRN) alongside Vodafone, EE and Three UK.

Customers of mobile operator Three UK have this week noticed that they can no longer sign-up to use the company’s exclusive Wuntu rewards app, which instead warns those who try that the service is set to close on 15th December 2019. At present if you want to take a home broadband service on Cityfibre’s new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network then, under an exclusivity agreement, you have to get it from their UK ISP partner Vodafone (Gigafast Broadband). But if a reported contract renegotiation succeeds then more ISPs could join (TalkTalk, Sky Broadband etc.).

Openreach (BT) appears to be hunting for a third strategic supplier to help support their UK roll-out of a new Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The move might also help to reduce their reliance on Chinese firm Huawei, which remains the subject of on-going security concerns.

Openreach (BT) has announced that, after 12 months of building, their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the UK city of Bristol has now extended its coverage to 80,000 local premises (40% of the city) and rising. Sadly they don’t say how much further they intend to go.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun a consultation on the proposed introduction of a new “bulk upgrade process,” which requires an exclusion in Openreach’s (BT) quality of service regulation but would make it more efficient for them to upgrade slower lines to FTTC (VDSL2) based broadband ISP connections.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has issued an update on the Project Lightning expansion of their ultrafast broadband and TV network in Scotland, which has so far seen them invest an extra £150m to reach a further 220,000 premises since 2016. We assume they’re still headed toward the 360,000 target set a few years ago.

The UK Conservative Party has today published their own Manifesto for the 12th December 2019 General Election, which naturally repeats their existing pledges to cover the whole of the UK with “gigabit-capable” broadband services by 2025 and to spend £5bn on helping to reach those in the hardest to reach (final 20%) of areas.
