Community Fibre and Openreach Bring FTTP to Croydon Homes

London-focused UK broadband ISP Community Fibre has signed a new agreement with Croydon Council, which will enable their Gigabit speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach an additional 11,000 social homes across the borough. Openreach (BT) has also reached a similar access agreement.

South Yorkshire UK Finish Phase 1 Superfast Broadband Rollout

The Superfast South Yorkshire project has today announced the official completion of their £27m Phase 1 rollout contract with Openreach (BT) and the BDUK programme, which helped to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks available to 95,000 extra premises (over 97% coverage of the county).

Virgin Media UK Secures Local Full Fibre Contract for Belfast

UK ISP Virgin Media Business has won the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) contract for Belfast in Northern Ireland, which will see more than 200 public sector sites being linked up by a new Gigabit-capable data network. The move should also complement Virgin Media’s 1Gbps DOCSIS 3.1 broadband rollout for homes.

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project has announced that Openreach (BT) have just built their 5000th FTTC (VDSL2) broadband ISP cabinet under the project, which will also be one of the “last for the programme” as they switch to focus on Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Openreach (BT) and the Sheffield City Council have today signed a new ‘Digital Connectivity Charter‘, which aims to help improve the local coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the city through various measures (e.g. a common approach to wayleaves and permit applications).

As part of this week’s routine check of UK ISP prices we noticed that BT appears to have removed their older pure copper line ADSL / ADSL2+ based unlimited broadband and phone packages from display, which leaves only their FTTC, G.fast and FTTP based “fibre” broadband services on display for new customers.

Broadband is Top Priority for Vast Majority of Moving UK Students

A new survey of 1,000 UK students, which was conducted by OnePoll on behalf of full fibre ISP Hyperoptic, has claimed that broadband connectivity is a top “priority” for the vast majority (88%) when moving into student housing. Students also spend an average of 55 hours a week online, but just 14 hours of this on work.

Citizens Advice to Three UK – “Stop Ripping Off” Loyal Customers

The Citizens Advice agency has this morning called Three UK out for “being the only major provider to refuse to commit to measures to stop ripping off all its loyal customer,” with the organisation claiming that the operator overcharges loyal customers by between £1.5 and £2.7 million a month.

JT’s Full Fibre Short-listed for World Communication Awards

Broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today announced that they’ve started a trial of both DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) services, which encrypts Domain Name System requests (i.e. turning IP addresses into human readable domains like ISPreview.co.uk and back again) in order to make them secure.

Mobile operator Three UK has today pledged that existing customers can expect “performance improvements” (i.e. faster mobile broadband speeds) of up to 150% as part of a major upgrade, which will see them both rollout L-Band (1.4GHz) technology to boost 4G and switch some of their 3G spectrum to 4G.

BT to Propose Full Fibre Move and Copper Switch Off by 2027 UPDATE

Reports this morning claim that BT (Openreach) are in “secret” negotiations with the government and UK ISPs about a new six point plan, which could see the last of their old copper phone lines being switched off by 2027 and replaced by “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband. Provided everybody agrees of course.

UK Ranks 13th out of 34 Countries in New Connectivity Index

The United Kingdom has placed 13th out of 34 countries in a new Connectivity Index from Carphone Warehouse, which ranks sixteen different metrics across each country (transport links, information sharing, mobile broadband speeds, tourism and immigration etc.) in order to determine which are the most connected.

A couple of months ago Openreach (BT) cut the wholesale prices for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband lines for UK ISPs (here) and revealed that they were planning to introduce two new top tiers for consumers – 550Mbps (75Mbps upload) and 1000Mbps (115Mbps). Today we’ve learnt how much these will cost.
