The number of alternative network (altnet) UK ISPs, which are all planning to deploy Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks in an already fairly crowded market, has just increased yet again today with the tentative additions of Vorboss, Netomnia and Internetty (formerly Bright Orange Networks).

Cisco and CloudNet have begun live trials of their new OpenRoaming technology on Orkney (Scotland) via the wider 5G RuralFirst project, which aims to make it easier for mobile users to stay connected to the internet by allowing them to seamlessly and securely roam between different WiFi hotspots.

The UK division of Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, Statkraft, has confirmed that they’re conducting feasibility studies into the idea of building superfast Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband ISP networks on their future wind farms in Scotland, which could be used to improve coverage in remote rural areas.

Following earlier trials Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that it will proceed to deploy Fujikura’s Air-Blown Wrapping Tube Cable™ (AB-WTC), which they claim could result in a reduction of up to 80% in installation time compared with traditional cables that require fibres to be spliced individually.

Crowdsourced data researcher Tutela has examined the mobile network (3G, 4G) and mobile broadband performance of the United Kingdom’s 10 largest cities and discovered that London (England) is the worst of the bunch, while Glasgow (Scotland) is the best. Meanwhile EE was named the best operator for 8 of the 10 cities.

The Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable ISP connection, appears to have been so successful that there’s now just £20.4m remaining for eligible users (i.e. it’ll run out of money well before 31st March 2021).

The Reading Borough Council has proposed a new agreement with UK ISP Hyperoptic that could result in them installing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) initially to the authority’s own high-rise housing stock (subject to survey), but with the potential for further expansion to cover up to 75% of the geographic area of the Borough.

More than 40 businesses along The Shambles street in the city of York (England) – one of the oldest shopping street’s in Europe and the only “street” recorded in York’s Domesday entry of 1086 – have got access to a 1000Mbps “full fibre” network thanks to the Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has concluded their review of broadband ISP pricing and agreed industry changes that are designed to protect “vulnerable” consumers (e.g. pensioners) from “loyalty penalties,” which references how loyal customers (those who don’t switch or renegotiate) often end up paying more.

In a surprise twist Mozilla has informed the Government that they now have “no plans” to enable the DNS-over-HTTPS security feature by default for UK internet users in their popular Firefox website browser, at least not without “further engagement with public and private stakeholders.” Doh!

Good news. After months of preparation Zzoomm, which is a new ISP that aspires to cover 1 million UK homes with a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network by the end of 2024 (here), has this week started to build their first network in the Oxfordshire town of Henley-on-Thames.

Fixed wireless access ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers remote rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland with speeds of up to 35Mbps, has appointed a new Financial Director – Jennifer Nicoll – and moved into a bigger office. All of this comes ahead of a possible network expansion.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed that they’ve opened a preliminary investigation into a 4G mobile network outage that struck part of EE UK’s (BT) platform on 21st May 2019, which may have left some customers unable to contact the emergency services.

Full fibre network builder Cityfibre, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone, has announced that their £10m rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network in the Scottish city of Stirling and Bridge of Allan area has now “completed more than half of its build programme.”

The incumbent broadband ISP for Hull and East Yorkshire, KCOM, has announced that 100,000 customers have now taken out a service on their new £85m “Lightstream” FTTP broadband network, which covers 195,000 premises; this represents an extremely strong take-up of just over 50%.
