The chair of the cross-party British Infrastructure Group (BIG), Grant Shapps MP, has called on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate claims of “potential collusion between some major operators,” which it’s alleged may have contributed to the sudden collapse of mobile retailer Phones 4U in 2014.

Complaints firm Ombudsman Services, which is one of Ofcom’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) handlers for consumer broadband, phone and mobile gripes, has published a new report that notes how complaints about UK telecoms services have increased from 11% in 2018 to 12% this year.

A new study by TravelSim has analysed the number of free wifi hotspots, cost per MegaByte of data, average broadband speeds (mobile / wireless) and the number of hotels and airports with free wifi in 19 of the world’s most visited destinations to find the best and worst cities to stay connected whilst travelling.

Residents living on Old School Lane (Clifton) in the city of Bristol (South West England) can now access a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network after ISP Spectrum Internet extended their network into the area, albeit with a little help from the Government’s Gigabit Vouchers.

Customers of UK cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media may soon be getting a new User Interface (UI) for their Hub 3.0 wireless routers, which is currently being trialled. The new “Cloud Connect” UI is described as offering a seamless and real-time “Netflix like” cloud based experience.

The Cornwall County Council in South West England has agreed to create the “Superfast 3 – Inclusive Growth” broadband project at a total cost of £5.835m, which could extend the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to “at least” 2,700 additional premises (mostly homes and 546 businesses).

Broadband ISP Zen Internet says they’ve “permanently” reduced the price of their dedicated and fibre optic based Ethernet leased line data connectivity services for all businesses by up to 36%, which means that prices now start from just £230 +vat per month for 10Mbps and go up to £525 for 1Gbps.

Customers taking part in Sky Broadband’s new SOGEA product trial are also being provided with a new router (SR203), which is probably the long awaited successor to their current Sky Q Hub (ER110) device and will most likely be shipped alongside future G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” packages (possibly FTTC).

Fixed Wireless ISP 6G Internet (6GI), which despite the misleading name doesn’t actually use the 6G mobile standard (it doesn’t exist.. yet), has initially committed to rollout a 1Gbps (rising to 6Gbps by 2025) capable broadband network across 38,000 homes in Blackburn (Lancashire) over the next 2 years.

The Government’s controversial new internet age verification system, which was due to be implemented by commercial websites and “apps” that contain pornographic content (broadband ISPs would be forced to block sites that fail to comply), has once again been delayed and will not now be enforced from 15th July 2019.

The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (NWEAB) has today set out its plan for investing up to £7m from Wave 3 of the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme, which will see Gigabit capable fibre and “ultrafast broadband” services being used to connect up to 400 further public sector sites.

Customers of UK broadband ISP BT may be interested to know that they’ve increased the amount of devices able to harness their new UltraHD 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) video streaming quality on the BTSport TV App for mobile, tablet and large screen devices, which is a service feature that has been in trial since early 2019.

The UK Government has proposed to beef up the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) so that it can “decide for itself whether consumer protection law has been broken” and impose fines for “wrongdoing,” such when potentially unfair pricing is applied to vulnerable customers (“loyalty penalty“).
