Winners of the 2019 Connected Britain Broadband Awards Confirmed

Wednesday, Jun 19th, 2019 (7:37 am) - Score 2,911

The annual Connected Britain Awards 2019 (Total Telecom) were handed out last might to a number of winners in London, which among other things saw several UK broadband ISPs and “full fibre” network projects (Openreach, BT, KCOM, Superfast Essex etc.) pick up awards for their various different efforts.

Overall some 74 different companies and organisations were nominated across various different categories and all of these entries were then assessed by a panel of judges, which included key figures from the Broadband Stakeholders Group, Total Telecom and various other organisations with industry links.

The full list of winners and descriptions can be found below. Congrats to all.

Winners of the Connected Britain Awards 2019

The Superfast Award
Essex County Council – Superfast Essex

Essex County Council won the Superfast Award for 2019, with their Superfast Essex initiative. The Council has worked tirelessly to bring superfast connectivity to nearly 150,000 people in the county, the judges said.

Community Improvement Award
Good Things Foundation

The Good Things Foundation won the Community Improvement Award, for its work in helping to reduce Britain’s digital divide. With an estimated 11 per cent of people in rural communites still unable to get a good broadband connection, the judges felt that this was an important and topical entry.

Digital Skills Awards
One Digital partnership (hosted by Age UK)

The One Digital Partnership landed the Digital Skills Award, for its work providing digital training to 16,500 people across the country. The One Digital Partnership is made up of Age UK, Citizens Online, Clarion Futures (part of Clarion Housing Group), Digital Unite and the Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), who collaborate to deliver projects helping people benefit from being online.

The IoT Award
O2 (O2 Smart Compliance)

O2 was awarded the IoT Award for 2019, thanks to their work with ScotRail in ensuring the security of workers in potentially hazardous situations. ScotRail needed a digital solution to help them align with the Department for Transport’s requirements and standards for security/safety, such as real time information, time sensitive prompts and tamper proof records.

Wireless Connectivity Award
BT Complete Wi-Fi

BT scooped the Wireless Connectivity Award for its launch of the Compete Wi-Fi solution – which made BT the first broadband provider in the world to guarantee a strong, reliable connection in every room of a customer’s house.

Fibre Connectivity Award
KCOM

With FTTH levels in the UK up to 7 per cent, this was a hotly contested category. KCom scooped the accolades for bringing ultrafast broadband services to 200,000 businesses and consumers in East Yorkshire. Such was the level of competition in this category, that the judges awarded highly commended certificates to CityFibre, Hyperoptic and TrueSpeed.

Smart City Initiative
City of York Council

With the launch of 5G connectivity in the UK, Smart City technology is set to really take off in the coming months and years. The City of York Council won this category for their innovative approach to fast-tracking the uptake of IoT services in the social housing, social care and transportation sectors.

Barrier Removal Award
London Borough of Southwark

The London Borough of Southwark won the Barrier Removal Award for its work in creating a team dedicated to supporting the installation of vital infrastructure on Southwark’s housing stock. After 9 months, this scheme has enabled gigabit connectivity to nearly 30 per cent of the borough’s 54,000 homes.

SME Service Provider of the Year
Glide Business

With the bulk of 5G use cases coming from the enterprise sector, this award was particularly topical as the UK kicked off its fledgling 5G network services. Glide Business won this award for their commitment to liberating their customers from poor or lagging connectivity in areas that had been previously neglected by other service providers.

Final Mile Award
Openreach

Britain’s incumbent broadband network operator, Openreach, won the Final Mile Award for bringing enhanced broadband services to hard to reach customers in remote areas of Scotland, with some customers seeing their average connection speed improve 2,000 times over, from 0.5Mbps – 1Gbps.
