Telecoms giant BT (EE) has announced that their new 5G based UK mobile broadband network will be underpinned by a cloud-driven platform from Juniper Networks. As a result the operator hopes to enable a more flexible, virtualised and unified network infrastructure that can deliver to various different requirements.

In a surprise 11th hour twist the incumbent telecoms and broadband ISP for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has rejected a £504m cash offer for its business from a subsidiary of pension fund Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd (USS) and gone with a £563m takeover bid from Macquarie Infrastructure (MIRA).

The Scottish Government has officially implemented a new Code of Practice in Scotland, which appears to create a uniform technical standard for “narrow trenching” method of civil engineering (i.e. trenches less than 300mm in width) that could help to speed up the rollout of fibre broadband ISP networks across the country.

The Government has revealed that they will soon legislate to create a new independent “consumer advocate,” which will be given the task of tackling “unfair” practices within the UK telecoms market (broadband ISPs and mobile operators). On top of that they will also provide “direct support” to consumers.

A small development this morning as cable ISP Virgin Media has decided to replace the “VIVID” branding on their ultrafast broadband packages. Instead future packages will adopt the letter ‘M’ (assumed to denote Megabits) and their top tier 516Mbps triple-play bundle will be renamed from “V.VIP” to “Ultimate Oomph.”

The biggest home broadband, phone, mobile and pay TV providers from across the United Kingdom have today announced that they’re signing up to Ofcom’s new “Fairness for Customers” commitment, which covers a variety of areas from the quality of support to clarity of information and fairness in pricing.

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has announced that it is looking for ISPs to help support the launch of a new funding scheme, which is due to launch later in 2019 and will help rural communities to get a faster broadband network built. Meanwhile Gigaclear has been given a deadline to get their FTTP plan sorted.

Openreach (BT) is slowly progressing with a future upgrade of their hybrid-fibre G.fast broadband technology, which could enable the service to harness some of the existing radio spectrum frequency being used by VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines. Early tests show a possible boost to speed and coverage.

Cityfibre has confirmed that their new Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP / Ethernet) network, which was first announced all the way back in October 2017 (here), is finally going live in the town of Cheltenham (Gloucestershire, England) and should cover over 200 businesses via local ISP partner Bamboo.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has announced that “selected customers” of their broadband ISP and TV network will be able to sign-up to an exclusive offer for Plume‘s smart home services bundle (separate to their current VM subscription), which will enable them to receive the AI and Cloud powered WiFi boosting kit.

Cable broadband and TV operator Virgin Media has today appointed Seamus McCorry to be the Regional Director for its on-going Project Lightning network expansion programme in Northern Ireland. The network currently covers more than 320,000 premises in the region and reaches 98% of Belfast (where it has an office of 100 people).

A new survey of 2,115 UK homeowners has claimed that 62% of respondents would be willing to increase the value of an offer on a house if it was “guaranteed” to deliver “superfast broadband” ISP speeds and 25% of those would increase their offer by £3000-£5000, while 10% said they’d go over £5,000.

The Citizens Advice agency has accused Ofcom of allowing UK phone and broadband providers to “overcharge” consumers to the tune of £100m between 2014 and 2018 due to “errors” they allegedly made when setting price controls on network operators. The charity now wants to see ISPs being forced to refund it.

A new report from the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) and Point Topic has estimated that alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISPs grew their coverage by 30% in 2018, reaching 1,298,185 UK premises. Related providers are now forecast to reach 3.38m premises by the end of 2020 and 15.96m by 2025.
