At least one of KC’s fibre optic broadband engineers in Hull (East Yorkshire, England) could be in hot water after demonstrating a worrying lack of personal data security by effectively exposing the ISPs unencrypted user passwords (and other personal data) during an on-site service installation visit.

CityFibre, which builds and manages true ultra-fast fibre optic (FTTH/P) networks in several large towns and cities around the United Kingdom, has raised approximately £16.5m this morning after confirming their admission to and trading of its Ordinary Shares on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange.

A new survey commissioned by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which was conducted on 2,011 adults aged 16-75 in Great Britain by Ipsos Mori, has revealed that 53% of respondents view broadband Internet connectivity as the greatest engineering innovation of the last decade.

Budget broadband provider TalkTalk today claims to have become “the first and only ISP” to make all of its fixed phone line privacy calling features, such as Last Caller Barring and Anonymous Caller Reject, completely free.

What’s in a name? Nominet, which handles the registry of .uk Internet domains, has bowed to Government pressure and agreed to begin the screening of website domain names so that any which “appear to signal … criminal content … or encourage serious sexual offences” can be blocked.

The £409.8 million Digital Scotland scheme, which seeks to make BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 85% of local premises by the end of 2015 and “around” 95% by the end of 2017 (84% by 2016 for HIE), has named the next communities and local authority areas to be upgraded by summer 2014.

Ofcom has today published a new report for the Government that benchmarks the take-up, awareness and confidence of parents and children in relation to the use of online Parental Controls, such as the network-level Internet filters now being adopted by all of the major broadband ISPs. The results make for an interesting read.

The Managing Director of UK business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has criticised BT for “short-sighted and self-absorbed behaviour” after he completed on a new flat in London only to find that the operator was installing older copper phone and broadband cables into the premises instead of true fibre optic.

The largely community funded and built B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project, which has been rolling out a 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband network in parts of rural Lancashire (England, UK), has vented frustration at BT after the operator began deploying its own FTTP service in one of their areas by using public money.

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Maria Miller, confirmed during a meeting yesterday that the former Commercial Director of the London 2012 Olympics Organising Committee, Christopher Townsend, would now lead its Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project. A launch date for the new £10m Competitive Fund for rural areas was also revealed.

Global financial services firm UBS has triggered an uplift in BSkyB’s (Sky Broadband) stock price after suggesting that the company could merge its European pay-TV assets to form Sky Europe and or then pick-up a mobile operator by merging O2 (Telefonica UK) or Vodafone UK into their operations.
