After plenty of warning BTOpenreach has today withdrawn from new supply a selection of its first truly fibre optic (FTTP) based broadband ISP products including the 40/15Mbps, 100/15Mbps, 110/15Mbps, 100/30Mbps and 330/20Mbps options (download / upload speed in Megabits).

The European Commission (EC) has braced the telecoms market for the imminent introduction of new rules to correct for the current “regulatory mess” that is allegedly “hurting” investment in the rollout of next generation superfast broadband networks and leaving consumers “stuck in the internet slow lane“.

The Newcastle City Council (NCC) has today signed a new £3.8 million state aid supported deal with BT that will extend the coverage of the UK telecom giants “high-speed fibre broadband” network to 97% of local homes and businesses in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by the end of Summer 2015.

Cheshire-based ISP Vispa has finally completed the installation of a new fibre optic capacity link from BT, which has been in the planning stages since earlier this year (here) when capacity problems contributed to some performance woes on their City Wireless network and later caused new installations to be suspended.

The Milton Keynes Council, Central Bedfordshire Council and Bedford Borough Council in England have today signed a new state aid supported £12m deal that will see BT expand the reach of its fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P) network to cover “around” 91% of local premises (33,000) by spring 2016.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project has announced that four Blaenau Gwent towns have become the first communities in South Wales (United Kingdom) to benefit from its joint scheme with BT, which aims to make fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P) available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016.

The Shropshire County Council have recently joined other local authorities in publishing a new map that shows the planned rollout of their £24.6 million state aid supported BT fibre broadband (FTTC/P) deployment in the region, which is expected to cover 93% of local premises by the end of Spring 2016 (excludes Telford & Wrekin).

Three UK has today moved to steal some of O2 and Vodafone’s thunder by announcing that its new 800MHz and possibly 1800MHz based superfast 4G (LTE) Mobile Broadband network will officially launch during December 2013 in the cities of London, Birmingham and Manchester (England).

Mobile operators O2 and Vodafone, which have a joint network sharing deal (here), will today switch-on their first superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband networks using the new 800MHz frequency band in London (England). Both operators have a similar rollout plan and packages (albeit with different content offers).

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has announced that its YouView (IPTV) based Plus TV bundle has now managed to attract 500,000 subscribers, which comes 11 months after launching the service and represents 12.28% of their total broadband customer base (4,071,000).

Mobile operator EE has confirmed that their superfast 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network has now been switched-on in 105 towns and cities, which has pushed the total network coverage out to reach over 60% of the United Kingdom.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has rejected two BT complaints against a TV advert for Virgin Media’s service that featured actor David Tennant. BT claimed that Virgin’s advert “misleadingly implied that VirginMedia customers always received “superfast” broadband speeds” and “exaggerated the difference in the performance“.

The Leicestershire County Council (LCC) in England (midlands) has today signed a new state aid supported £16.9 million deal with BT that should result in 95% of the region being given access to the operators new high-speed “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) internet access network by March 2016 (the last 5% will get at least 2Mbps).

A live experiment conducted at six locations around central London (UK) has revealed that 36% (322) of the wifi hotspots identified were “completely unsecure” and potentially a ripe playground for hackers and fraudsters. A related poll also found that only a third of people consider how secure a WiFi network is before connecting.

BT’s consumer division has confirmed that thousands of customers will be affected when the ISP officially closes their old dialup (narrowband) internet access platform (both the £17.25 per month anytime unmetered option and their pay-as-you-go package) on 1st September 2013.
