Japanese ISP So-net, which is supported by Sony and launched its first Internet connection services in 1996, appears to have introduced one of the world’s fastest live commercial Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband packages with a download speed of 2Gbps (1Gbps uploads) or around 2,000Mbps in megabits.

The National Audit Office (NAO), which is responsible for scrutinising public spending on behalf of Parliament, has confirmed that it will investigate whether or not Ofcom’s underperforming auction of the 4G (LTE) based 800MHz and 2.6GHz mobile broadband spectrum has delivered “value-for-money“.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed a series of “major changes” to how phone call charges are handled, which is designed to make the cost of calling businesses and services clearer for consumers (focus on 08, 09 and 118 numbers). Calls to 080 numbers could also become free from “all telephones” including mobile.

The non-profit B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project has confirmed that its “hyperfast” 1000Mbps capable community-built and funded Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband network in rural Lancashire (England) will now be extended from 8 to 21 parishes and a new share offer has been launched to support the move.

The outgoing leader of Swindon Borough Council (SBC), Rod Bluh (Conservative), has been handed the gift of a Wi-Fi router by his opponent Derique Montaut (Labour). The award was given as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Bluh’s oversight of the flawed plan to roll-out a universal free wireless internet service across the borough.

BT has apologised to around 1,600 homes and businesses in Cheltenham (Gloucestershire, England) after an attempted cable theft from under a manhole cover in Bath Parade resulted in many premises being left without broadband and phone services for two weeks.

The World Economic Forum has released its annual Global Information Technology Report 2013, which ranks 144 countries by their information and communication technologies (ICTs) capability and includes a lengthy defence of FTTC by BT. A strong broadband market is also one of many factors that push the United Kingdom up three places to rank 7th overall.

The government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) recently published the results of its Farm Practices Survey 2012, which reported that 86% of farms had access to a computer in 2012 (up from 74% in 2008) and 98% of those were connected to the internet. But fast broadband ISP connectivity remains a rarity.

at800.tv (DMSL), which was setup by UK mobile operators to support homes that could lose their digital terrestrial TV services due to interference from 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services in the 800MHz spectrum band, has announced that its first major urban test will take place in South East London from 15th April 2013.

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that a “major outage“, which left a large area of West London (England) without broadband and TV services for around 24 hours from Sunday night, was caused by an attempted theft at one of its key network hubs.
