BT Group -Sign-on-Office-Window-2025

Telecoms giant BT Group just published a short trading update to the end June 2026, which reveals that Openreach lost a total of 192,000 broadband lines to rivals over the past quarter (improved from -203k last quarter). But their “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage grew to 23.4 million premises (up from 22.92m) and EE’s 5G+ mobile coverage reached 77% of the UK population.

After a few days of conflicting messaging, the Government in Westminster did yesterday confirm that responsibility for all things broadband and mobile related – this includes programmes covered by the Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency and related aspects – has been shifted back to a re-named Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). But now the ‘D’ stands for Digital (I guess.. DDCMS?).

A new study from UK network analyst firm Streetwave, which recently used bin lorries to map the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks across Northern Ireland, has questioned the accuracy of Ofcom’s mobile coverage data after finding a big difference between the regulator’s figures and those of their own research.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has made it easier for UK ISPs to migrate customers on legacy broadband services, such as those supplied over their Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and FTTC (GEA) products. In short, it’s now possible to migrate such lines under their Equinox discounts to SOGEA equivalents at any connection speed.

Alternative broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has already expanded their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover over 3 million UK premises (inc. 500,000 customers) and is in the process of being acquired by the parents of Virgin Media (O2) and nexfibre, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve put around 100 further workers on notice of possible redundancy.

Global fibre optic kit manufacturer ACOME, which is based in France, has this morning announced that they intend to integrate off-shoots Idea Optical and LYNDDAHL Telecom under a single company in order to “better support customers” (i.e. broadband network operators, data centres and civil engineering firms) in the United Kingdom.

Broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today attempted to reignite the Net Neutrality debate, again, by calling on Ofcom to soften their guidelines in order to “unlock innovation and new mobile network investment“. The rules were originally established to prevent unfair blocking or slowing of access to legal websites and other internet services by comms providers.

A new report has indicated that a number of UK broadband ISPs may soon start bundling British device manufacturer Manhattan’s Freely-supporting Aero 4K TV Streaming Box, or similar kit using the TiVo OS, alongside some of their packages. The move could provide some extra competition for rival platforms like Netgem TV’s popular PLEIO box and service (here).

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has published further analysis of the £2bn acquisition of full fibre alternative UK broadband network Netomnia (Substantial Group) by the parents of nexfibre and Virgin Media (O2). The research highlights how much of a bearing a single piece of competition-law math – the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) – may have on the deal being cleared or not.

Mobile network operator Vodafone has revealed how a new trial have seen them add an AI brain and robotic arm to one of their mast sites, which can be used to autonomously analyse where customers need signal coverage the most and then automatically adjust the radio antenna to improve the signal toward that area.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today unveiled the shortlist of finalists for their 2026 annual industry awards event, which sees 70 separate organisations (broadband ISPs, network builders etc.) being nominated across 13 “revised categories“.
