Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) will later this morning be introducing some new offers on their Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans, which will see double data across all their ‘Big Bundle’ and selected ‘Rolling Plan’ tariffs for both new and existing customers. But this will only last for up to 3 months.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has their latest Mobile Network Experience Report for Q1 2023, which examines the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all four primary network operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which delivers the best performance. Alternative broadband ISP Trooli, which is rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of England and originally aspired to cover 1 million premises by the end of 2024 (so far they claim to have covered 275k), has finally launched a cheaper entry-level 150Mbps tier.

Scottish ISP Lothian Broadband (LNBL), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of East and Mid Lothian, has announced that they’ve completed a £20m senior debt raise arranged by Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) – taking total investment capacity up to £50m for 2023.

Ofcom’s ongoing probe into internet-based UK cloud services, which tend to be dominated by big providers like Amazon (AWS) and Microsoft (Azure), has uncovered practices and features that “could limit competition” and is proposing to refer the market to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) for further investigation.

Internet provider MTH Networks, which sells full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages to customers covered by several different UK networks (e.g. Openreach, OFNL, Glide), has softened their approach to annual price rises for those on OFNL’s network (usually serves new build homes) and introduced a new social tariff.

Customers of UK telecoms giant BT may be interested to learn that the ISP has been conducting trials of a new Virtual Content Delivery Network (vCDN), which uses software-based caches that can be flexibly used at selected points, deeper in the network, to bring content (video etc.) closer to the “edge” where their users consume it.

Despite seeing a 300% increase in data carried across its UK network since 2019, their overall energy consumption has remained flat and emissions have fallen by 77%.
