Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have today become the first two network providers to reach a special deal, which will enable them to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the entire London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels). Full fibre builder Netomnia has today announced that the Wiltshire town of Trowbridge and the Somerset town of Frome will be next in line to benefit from their rollout of a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. This aims to cover 1 million UK homes and businesses by the end of 2023.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve connected 100,000 customers, via various different partner ISPs, to their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Northern Ireland. All of this will complement the £130m (capex) currently being invested between 2021 and 2022 to expand their coverage across NI.

Morden-based UK broadband ISP Grayshott Gigabit, which a few months ago (here) started to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of East Hampshire, the Surrey Hills and surrounding areas, has finally started to go live for customers in the village of Hindhead (Surrey).

Openreach (BT) has informed UK ISPs with Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and G.fast based broadband lines that they will shortly be running a new trial to test an improvement to the current reset process within the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) system, which could aid copper line stability a bit.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun to enforce a number of new consumer protection measures on mobile operators, which in practice means that they can no longer supply locked phones and are now limited to a maximum contract term of 24-months on bundles (mobile plans and handsets).

Around 1,000 premises in the Witchford and Ely area of Cambridgeshire (England) have been left without a fully working broadband ISP and phone connection after criminals ripped up and stole some of Openreach’s underground copper cables. Local residents have been told that the damage could take up to 14 days to fix.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today informed us that they’ve upgraded 2,876 locations in small towns and hamlets with 4G this year, and increased 4G network capacity in 178,500 postcodes across the UK. The network provider has also rolled out 5G in a total of 53 smaller towns and hamlets, in addition to urban areas.

Ofcom has released their Connection Nations 2021 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that the coverage of “gigabit-capable” (1Gbps+) broadband ISP networks has jumped from 27% last year to 47% now (13.7 million households). Plus, around half of UK properties are in areas where 5G mobile is available outside.
