Last month the Government’s Connection Voucher scheme, which gifted grants of up to £3,000 to help smaller UK businesses get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed, came to an end after funding dried up (here) and today we learn that a total of 55,000 SMEs have benefited.

The publicly funded Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which is deploying a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network across the rural Buckinghamshire (England) villages of North Marston and Granborough, is facing an official complaint from a nearby wireless ISP.

The South Gloucestershire Council in England has confirmed that its second state aid supported £1.54m contract with BTOpenreach has now entered into the deployment phase, which should put their “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network within reach of an extra 1,800+ local homes and businesses.

In a surprise move BT has confirmed that the Chief Executive Officer of their Openreach division, Joe Garner, is step down in order to take on the same role at the Nationwide Building Society. The switch comes at a pivotal point for the telecoms giant, which is facing the possibility of a split from BT group.

The manager of Vodafone’s fixed line network, Sean Teggart, claims that 80% of incidents involving broken fibre optic cables on their network are attributable to UK street works, while the rest can be caused by everything from shotgun wielding farmers to cable hungry rats.

Customers of EE’s TV (IPTV) service, which is usually taken alongside their fixed line broadband and phone bundles, should note that the ISP has just added 25 premium channels (Discovery, British Eurosport, Cartoon Network, HISTORY, Sony Movies etc.) as part of a new deal with TVPlayer.

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for maintaining / managing access to BT’s national UK telecoms and broadband network, has added a new “Fibre Index” page to their website that adds a small amount of extra information about broadband usage on their network.

The county of Cheshire in England, specifically the Connecting Cheshire project that is working to deploy “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to reach the vast majority of the region by summer 2017, has confirmed that clawback from BT will return £3.4m to help further boost coverage.

BT’s Consumer division has once again reduced the prices of their ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband and superfast ‘up to’ 38Mbps BTInfinity packages, with both now starting at £5 and £10 per month respectively for the first 12 months of service. Sainsbury’s vouchers worth up to £100 are also included.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK initiative, which is primarily working with BT to make fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 95% of the United Kingdom by 2017/18, has ended Q3 2015 by confirming that 3,311,843 extra premises have now benefited from the effort.

The Onlincolnshire project, which is working to roll-out FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services to “at least” 89% of all premises in Lincolnshire (England) by April 2016, has confirmed that clawback from BT will result in £4.6m being returned to help further boost coverage.

The incumbent East Yorkshire (England) telecoms operator, KC, has confirmed that 5,000 homes and businesses in East Hull have just been added to their on-going “Lightstream” fibre optic broadband (FTTP/C) roll-out project, which aims to reach more than 105,000 premises passed by March 2017.

It’s sometimes easy to forget that BTOpenreach still has the largest “ultrafast” 330Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network in the United Kingdom (details) as they rarely promote it, but there are exceptions, such as in the case of 3,650 new houses and flats being built in Swindon.

The Government has budgeted around £175 million+ over 10 years to cover the cost of storing everyone’s Internet records as part of their controversial new Investigatory Powers Bill (details), but MPs have been warned by ISPs that this might not even come close to covering the actual costs.
