The government’s Broadband Delivery UK project, which is responsible for overseeing the national £1.7bn publicly funded roll-out of fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services to 95% of people by 2017/18, spent £5.041 million of its budget on publicity (adverts) during the six months from September 2014 to February 2015.

Rochdale ISP Zen Internet has announced that their previously limited trial of Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6), which is designed to replace the old IPv4 Internet addressing standard, is now being opened up to all of their 95,000 or so broadband subscribers.

The Sky News TV channel, specifically its official YouTube based live video stream, was taken down last night following a complaint by FOX News in what appears to be the latest example of overzealous automated copyright linked Internet stupidity. On top of that Fox, which shares its parent company with Sky, also managed to screw up its own stream. Doh.

Over the next few months a new batch of students will be looking to take up their university or college places and as such BT and Virgin Media have introduced new packages that seem tailored to their needs with a shorter 9 month contract term. Mind you they’re not the only options in town.

The Connecting Cumbria project, which is currently aiming to roll-out “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services with BT to 95% of local premises by around mid-2018, has become the next Broadband Delivery UK scheme to confirm a clawback (gain share) linked reinvestment boost of £2.5 million.

Ofcom has launched an own-initiative investigation into Sky’s (Sky Broadband) compliance with their rules for governing service cancellation and terminations, which appear to have arisen following a bout of customer complaints.

Some people and telecoms operators around the United Kingdom are being hit by a spate of SPAM emails, which appear to emanate from the national regulator. Industry sources initially suggested to ISPreview.co.uk that Ofcom had suffered a security breach, although the regulator denies this.

Publicity disaster ahoy. Remember when EE made waves by giving customers of their mobile and home broadband services a free portable Smartphone charger (“Power Bar“)? Remember when it kept running out of stock and that annoyed people? Well now some of them also explode, hurray!

6th Aug 2015 (12 Comments)

The telecoms regulator has today published their annual 2015 Communications Market Report, which reveals the latest details about the take-up and usage of broadband, mobile, phone and broadcasting (TV and Radio) services across the United Kingdom (split by England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

The Better Broadband for Suffolk scheme, which is working with BT to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to 95% of local homes and businesses “before 2018” and hopefully 100% by 2020, has become the latest Broadband Delivery UK project to confirm a clawback (gain share) linked reinvestment boost of £3.9 million.

National UK cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published their latest results to the end of Q2 2015, which reveals that they’ve reached a total of 4,570,300 broadband customers, with 40% of those now taking their “ultrafast” 100Mbps+ services.

5th Aug 2015 (4 Comments)

Most people are probably familiar with Gigaclear as an ISP that has put huge investment towards delivering ultrafast 1000Mbps capable fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P) services into rural areas, but a new deal with Europasat (SSW) will soon also see them supporting the roll-out of inferior Satellite.

Residents of the large Bourne End village in Buckinghamshire (England) are furious at BTOpenreach after they were left without broadband for over a week, which came after a car crashed into one of the operators local street cabinets (no. 37 on Cores End Road) and nearly obliterated it.

The Nottingham City Council and BT have today begun to switch-on a new network of free public WiFi wireless Internet hotspots, which should eventually become available to 310,000 residents and businesses within the city centre area (not to mention the millions of annual visitors).

5th Aug 2015 (2 Comments)

In theory having access to order a native 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service over BTOpenreach’s national UK network should be a good thing, but sometimes if it’s your only option for a faster connection then it can also become very.. very expensive.

No, it’s not Chewbacca’s home. The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has just expanded BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to reach an underground system of caves called the Wookey Hole Caves, although this is more of a fringe benefit as the main focus has been to connect 200 premises in the associated rural village of Wookey Hole.

4th Aug 2015 (14 Comments)

The National Farmers Union (NFU), which represents 55,000 members across England and Wales (around 70% of full time farmers support the NFU), has launched a major new survey of its members in order to find out how many are suffering from a poor fixed line broadband service or mobile signal.
