The latest post-4G auction study from Analysys Mason estimates that Vodafone, not EE, now has the most valuable mobile spectrum portfolio in the United Kingdom (worth over £2bn). The operator also spent £802m to secure several slices of the 800MHz and 2.6GHz band (here) in order to roll-out superfast Mobile Broadband services.

Angry Virgin Mobile customers with a pay-as-you-go or contract deal have been told that their 3G internet data download speeds are being restricted to a maximum of just 2Mbps (Megabits per second), which comes as part of a “trial” to help improve the networks performance amidst increasing congestion.

Cisco’s latest forecast has predicted that online video services will represent 66% of global Mobile Broadband traffic by 2017 (up from 51% in 2012), which will help to push total mobile data use from 0.9 Exabytes per month (i.e. 885 Petabytes) now to 11.2 EB in just five years’ time and outpace global fixed data traffic.

As expected the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to allow 4G (LTE) superfast Mobile Broadband services to also be delivered over the 900MHz, 1800MHz (EE are at present the only one allowed to do this) and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands that are currently used for a mix of existing 2G and 3G services.

The fate of the government’s £150m Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP), which aims to help “at least” 98% of UK people gain access to a Mobile Broadband (3G or 4G) service by the end of 2017, is still hanging in the balance after the deadline for agreement passed last month.

A new RootMetrics study of EE’s allegedly faster Mobile Broadband speeds has revealed that just 40.2% of its test locations had access to the 4G (1800MHz) network, yet speeds averaged 17Mbps (Megabits per second) in locations where it was available and 7.6Mbps when only 3G connectivity could be found.

The communications regulator has published its annual 2012 Infrastructure Report, which claims that “close to” 100% of premises in the United Kingdom can now receive a broadband service (71% take-up) and just 10% can only get sub-2Mbps speeds (down from 14% in 2011). Superfast broadband (25Mbps+) is also available to 65% of homes and businesses (7% take-up).

A new Government commissioned report from Analysys Mason has revealed that the total radio spectrum (e.g. wifi, digital tv, 3G etc.) market was worth £52 billion a year to the UK economy in 2011 (up 25% in real terms since 2006) and rising. But Mobile Broadband is going to get cheaper.

The latest RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband speeds has revealed that Three UK delivers the fastest connection in London (T-Mobile was the slowest), where the average download speed is 2.265Mbps (Megabits per second). But mobile speeds in New York were on average found to be four times faster (8.5Mbps).

The country’s mobile phone operators have finally agreed to put aside their differences after Ofcom moved its timetable for the auction of superfast 4G (LTE) compatible mobile broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz) forward by roughly 6 months, which weakened EE’s perceived early-launch advantage. But will Freeview TV services suffer?

Mobile operators O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone have been given the green light to merge their UK based 2G, 3G and future 4G (LTE) platforms through a new network sharing agreement that will also lay the foundations for 98% population coverage by the end of 2015 (two years ahead of Ofcom’s 2017 deadline).

Cable operator Virgin Media Business claims to have “successfully trialled … LTE-ready” small cell based Mobile Broadband technology in Newcastle and Bristol (England), which delivered internet speeds that were “three times faster than current 3G networks” (i.e. up to 90 Megabits per second).
