A new survey from Viasat and the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association), which questioned 12,390 mobile phone users across twelve markets (including the UK), claims to have revealed the “booming consumer demand” for Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite services (mobile calls, texts and internet data).

A new virtual mobile operator (mvno) has launched today called Rocket Mobile, which claims to have been “built exclusively for football fans” and will harness 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity from Three UK’s (VodafoneThree) national UK network infrastructure.

Wireless infrastructure firm Cellnex UK has today announced that they’ve partnered with the Harrow Council in London to deploy Small Cell technology across the Borough’s street furniture, which will target 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) connectivity “blackspots” around high streets and transport hubs.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’re looking to spread some festive cheer and help data-hungry customers to stay connected this festive season, not least by gifting 10GB (GigaBytes) of 4G and 5G data “throughout December” to millions of their customers “at no extra cost“.

Network analyst firm Streetwave, in collaboration with Growing Mid Wales and the Welsh Government (WG), has shared the results from a recent survey they conducted, which tested the mobile broadband coverage and performance of 4G and 5G networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 – around the recently held Royal Welsh Show.

Satellite operator AST SpaceMobile, which is working with Joint Venture (SatCo) partner Vodafone to launch a space-based 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) service to connect with everyday Smartphones on the ground, has announced that their first commercial BlueBird 6 spacecraft will launch on 15th December from the Satish Dhawan Space Center (India).

Mobile operator VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) has revealed that 8,000 mast sites have now been upgraded to implement their new Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN). This is one of the first big benefits of the recent merger (here and here) – allowing customers to roam across both networks at no extra cost (whichever one provides the best signal).

Connectivity provider Neos Networks, which operates one of the biggest 34,000km long and 400Gbps capable business fibre optic networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 600+ Points of Presence (PoPs), has completed the first fibre installation under Project Reach to help improve 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) coverage along major rail lines.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has revealed that they’ve recently boosted 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across 590 miles of road in the UK (i.e. major motorways and A roads, including the M1, M4, M6, M8 and M25). The move aims to improve network reliability and help drivers with navigation, charging apps and calls to breakdown services etc.

TechUK, which represents many of the UK’s key technology firms, has today drawn on 23 indicators from across the economy, connectivity, and skills to paint a regional and national picture of the tech ecosystem via their 2025 Local Digital Index. But the report also calls on the government to “fast-track” completion of its broadband and mobile projects to tackle slow spots, ideally alongside relief from business rates.

Ofcom has today released their Connection Nations 2025 digital infrastructure report earlier than usual, which reveals that residential gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks now cover 87% of the UK (up from 84% in 2024), while outdoor 5G coverage from at least one mobile operator is available to 97% of premises (up from 95%). But rural cover remains weaker.

The cross-party Home-based Working Committee (Lords Select Committee) has published its report on remote and hybrid working in the UK, which among other things finds that the government should “increase long-term investment in digital infrastructure, particularly broadband” in order to properly support such working.

A few months ago we reported that the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in England and network analyst firm Streetwave had begun a new project to map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and speed across the region using bin lorries (here). The data from this has now been made available to the public via a new interactive map.

Cellnex UK consolidated 4G and 5G mobile mast for VodafoneThree

Wireless infrastructure firm Cellnex has today announced that they’ve delivered their “very first” consolidated 4G and 5G mast site for the recently merged mobile operators of Vodafone and Three UK (VodafoneThree) – five months ahead of schedule, which was established in the Lancashire (England) town of Burnley. Many more are expected to follow.

Consumer mobile provider SMARTY, which is a virtual mobile operator (MVNO) on the Three UK (VodafoneThree) network, has today launched a new “Everyone Unlimited” group plan that offers unlimited data (4G / 5G mobile broadband) deals for all group members (each group can include up to 8 members). Savings of up to £35 per month are said to be possible.
