German supermarket giant Lidl (Schwarz Group) has reportedly announced plans to launch its own mobile (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) service in a number of other markets later this year, which could eventually reach up to 30 countries including the UK, US, France and Spain etc.

The Government has published an evaluation of recent flexi-permit trials, which is a process that UK mobile and broadband operators have been requesting for some years. But despite most of the feedback being positive, the number of caveats involved meant the evaluation was “not able to make a definitive recommendation either in favour of or against proceeding with flexi-permit legislation“.

Network analyst firm Streetwave have today shared the results from a recent survey they conducted, which tested the mobile broadband coverage and performance of 4G and 5G networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 – across the Moray Council area in Scotland. Overall the study found a 40 point performance gap between the best and worst mobile networks.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has published the results from their £80.5m programme to support the development of open network solutions, such as 5G based OpenRAN on mobile broadband networks and other technologies, which began in 2023 (here).

Mobile operator Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has announced that they’ve deployed their fastest 5G Standalone (5GSA) based mobile broadband network (indoors) across Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 Departures at Manchester Airport, while also improving existing 4G and general 5G network coverage. The move should help to cope with busy periods and deliver better performance.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has launched a new high speed Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product called OSA Mobile. The new fibre optic data capacity link is designed to connect UK street furniture (lampposts, street cabinets, etc.) to support the rollout of 4G / 5G Small Cells and front haul applications for mobile operators, as well as public WiFi hotspots, CCTV and broadcast applications etc.

The mobile operator division of supermarket chain ASDA, which is powered by a virtual network operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone, has just today refreshed four of their Pay Monthly SIM-Only mobile plans (both in 12-month and 24-month minimum terms). At the same time they’ve also remove four of their older plans.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that they’ve signed new multi-year agreements with their strategic partners Ericsson and Nokia to upgrade their Radio Access Network (RAN). The move will result in “thousands of mobile sites” across the UK being upgraded to support their latest 5G Standalone (5G+) technology for faster mobile broadband speeds.

Broadband and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) have teamed-up with the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT), University of Glasgow, VoltServer, ATS and KTL to demonstrate how mobile connectivity, power delivery, fibre backhaul and IoT services can be combined into a single unified infrastructure at a “fraction of the cost of traditional approaches“.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects broadband performance data from consumers via their popular Speedtest.net service, has today published a report that examines the mobile broadband (5G) performance of Apple’s new custom C1X modem in the iPhone Air. The results are then compared against the Qualcomm X80-based iPhone 17 Pro Max and the previous C1 modem in the iPhone 16e.

A new report from The YIMBY Initiative (TYI), which describes itself as a cross-party UK research led think-tank, has today argued that “small changes” to existing legislation and frameworks could reform the planning system just enough to help boost the deployment and coverage of 5G based mobile broadband networks.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today worked with Vecta Labs to deploy “Europe’s first pre-assembled mobile mast” at a site in Sandwich, Kent (England) – taking only 4 hours to complete, which compares with the usual 2 days. Such an approach could speed up the roll-out of new mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) infrastructure, reduce deployment costs and cut downtime.
