The Digital Connectivity Forum, which is an industry think-tank for the UK Government, has published a new “advanced connectivity” report that analyses “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and 5G mobile deployments, take-up and use cases to understand the key barriers and drivers of adoption, as well as what we might need in the future.

A new study from Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) claims to have found that the UK’s major mobile operators are currently delivering mobile broadband (4G and 5G) speeds that “satisfy the majority of mobile users” and, apparently, the “sweet spot” for most Apps is said to be between just 1-5Mbps. But this does require some context.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave and train operator c2c have today published the results of a new real-world benchmark, which examined the mobile network (2G to 5G) performance of EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK across the Essex Thameside Railway route. Overall, EE customers get the best experience.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media (O2) have today hailed the results of a new trial – delivered in collaboration with shareholder Liberty Global, which is said to have “successfully” deployed 4G and 5G “smart poles” on top of its existing fibre broadband cabinets in the UK to help boost mobile network coverage and capacity.

Network builder and broadband ISP G.Network, which recently resumed rolling out their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in London (here), has announced that they’ve signed a “strategic partnership” with digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks to help boost the city’s 4G and 5G small cell and fibre coverage.

The UK Government’s Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, has revealed that she will next week hold a roundtable with colleagues, as well as Ofcom, to discuss rising community complaints against the use of broadband poles and wireless masts to deliver digital infrastructure. But this time, some action may follow.

A group of full fibre broadband operators, which are being led by alternative network providers Ogi and Vorboss, have today called on the UK Government and Ofcom to urgently help tackle a recent rise in attacks – often committed by criminal gangs and vandals – against vital national telecoms infrastructure and the engineers who build it.

The CCO of the Complete Technology Group (CTG), Kevin Monaghan, has criticised today’s Spring Budget 2024 announcement for both failing to “crackdown” on broadband ISPs “inflicting substantial mid-contract price hikes” on consumers and not announcing any new provisions to help upgrade digital infrastructure.

Trade body Mobile UK, which represents Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone, has made a last minute plea for the government to use this week’s Spring Budget to introduce changes that would foster a more “positive investment environment” for mobile operators and thus boost their network upgrades.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today published a short progress update on their national work to switch-off the old 3G data (mobile broadband) network, which reveals that the last of 18,000 sites to be shut-down – in Belfast – was finally taken off the air last week.

O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today become the second major UK mobile operator, after Vodafone, to switch-on a commercial 5G Standalone (SA) network in the UK, which will deliver faster mobile broadband speeds (inc. latency) and more service flexibility. The service has initially gone live in parts of 14 cities and comes at “no extra” cost to customers.

Finnish technology firm Nokia, which supplies network kit to a number of UK broadband and mobile operators (EE, O2 etc.), has launched a new power saving mode called “extreme deep sleep” that it estimates could reduce power consumption on their radio kit in mobile networks by a factor of eight.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has today published their Q4 2023 results, which suggests that their full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre has grown to add another c.299,000 premises (up from 251k in Q3) and Virgin’s fixed broadband base slowed its growth to 5,717,600 (up by 9.5k in Q4 vs 40.8k in Q3).
