Telecoms giant BT (EE), and possibly several other UK network operators, have reportedly missed the 31st December 2023 deadline to remove Huawei’s equipment from their network cores. This puts them at risk of being fined up to 10% of their revenue or £100,000 per day for every day that they fail to comply.

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have this morning become the first providers to announce that their ongoing deployment of a new 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network on the London Underground – in partnership with Boldyn Networks and Nokia – has now been extended to the Elizabeth line for the first time.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today furnished us with a brief progress update on the 4G and 5G network upgrades they’ve been making across rural postcodes over the past year. Some of these have been focused on ensuring that their network is ready to cope with a surge in traffic over the peak Christmas shopping period.

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

The ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 came to an end last week and one of its key decisions was to announce that the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) can be used for mobile (5G and 6G), but also allows regulators like Ofcom in the UK to exploring a hybrid approach alongside WiFi.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2), specifically their Technical Trials team, has built a new 5G connected mobile base station that is tiny enough to be flown on a hand lifted drone (pictured), which is currently being trialled with Warwickshire Search and Rescue to help tackle issues of poor signal coverage in isolated rural areas.

Connect has today published their annual UK Mobile Network Test 2024 study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 38 towns and along over 10,400km of major roads. Overall, EE managed to come top again, while O2 (VMO2) continued their trend of being bottom.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has published a short progress update on their national plan and timeline for switching off the old 3G data (mobile broadband) network, which reveals some of the first UK locations that will be benefitting from the re-farming of related 3G spectrum for use by modern 5G services.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’ve made big progress toward their goal of helping 4 million UK people and businesses, usually reflecting those who are “experiencing digital exclusion“, cross the digital divide by 2025. As a result, they’ve so far donated connectivity to 2 million people, usually via free mobile data (broadband) and calling SIMs.

Ofcom has today proposed to update their resilience guidance to provide greater clarity on how UK broadband ISPs, mobile operators and other digital network companies can “reduce the risk of network outages“. Separately, they’re also seeking feedback on the issue of inadequate power backup at mobile network sites.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a supposedly “definitive” study of fixed broadband speeds across the United Kingdom, which reveals which ISPs are delivering both the best service quality and speeds to consumers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the table ends up being topped by CommunityFibre, Virgin Media and Hyperoptic etc.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has today published the first framework for the future 6G mobile (mobile broadband) and wireless networking technology (IMT-2030), which will support the development of related standards and radio interface technologies. The framework also reveals more about its potential capabilities.

Broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today announced that they’ve turned all of their UK stores into “National Digital Inclusion Hubs“, which will start offering free mobile data (mobile broadband), texts and calls to people who need it this Christmas – an extension of the Good Things Foundation’s National Databank.

A coalition of community, conservation and outdoor recreation groups has called on the Government to review its “rushed” and “haphazard telecoms mast rollout” under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which aims to extend geographic 4G (mobile broadband) coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has begun to consult on an update to their spectrum sharing framework, which among other things proposes a more flexible management approach to improve local spectrum availability for 5G (mobile / wireless broadband) and the related release of more shared frequency in the busiest 3.8 – 4.2 GHz bands.
