ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published their latest quarterly results (financial Q2 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +22,000 customers (vs +29k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 962,000. But their mobile base sat unchanged on 16,994,000.

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has today revealed the topics that will sit at the heart of their next (second) major assessment of the UK’s long-term infrastructure priorities, to be published in 2023, which among other things looks set to shift the focus on gigabit broadband from build to take-up.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that, after a long wait, they intend to finally start rolling out SMS (text messaging) support for Wi-Fi Calling “before the end of the year“, but this will be a gradual phased process that looks set to continue more widely during Q1 2022.

After a long delay due to COVID-19, the European Commission has today published their annual 2021 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which reveals how the EU’s fixed line broadband ISP and mobile networks compare. The UK was removed from this edition due to Brexit, so we’ve used Ofcom’s data to compare.

The UK Government will today launch its election manifesto as part of efforts to secure a seat on the governing council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which will give it more of a say in future standards (broadband, satellite technologies etc.) and the allocation of global spectrum (mobile etc.) etc.

Business ISP Baltic Broadband, which typically offers a mix of fixed wireless and full fibre broadband to firms in the Liverpool area, has introduced an unusual new product called the ‘Baltic Backpack‘ – designed to be introduced to tackle areas of slow or failed broadband, seemingly by harnessing multiple cellular networks.

The 5G RuralDorset project, which is testing various 5G based mobile voice and broadband technologies alongside existing fibre cables, claims to have achieved a “world-first” by demonstrating satellite backhaul from a 5G Standalone network (i.e. using satellite to keep the connection live when terrestrial mobile fails).

Ofcom has today confirmed that they will next year introduce new changes to help expand the range of licence exempt “mobile phone repeaters” for UK consumers to adopt, which can be used in locations where people want to boost mobile signals for indoor and in-vehicle (low gain) use.

The BT Group has published their Q2 2021/22 results, which reports that their consumer ISP division now has a total of 945,000 broadband customers on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 860K last quarter), while Openreach has grown their UK FTTP coverage to 5.78m premises (up from 5.16m). Build costs have also fallen.

The Infralink programme, which is supported by the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) and the Scotland 5G Centre, has today invited views and opinions from landlords, the mobile phone sector and their advisors to help improve the complicated process of locating digital infrastructure and making it “fit for purpose“.

The mobile division of supermarket giant ASDA, which is powered by a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone, has this week “permanently boosted” the data (mobile broadband) allowances of their entry-level £5 and £7 per month mobile bundles at no extra cost.

UK ISP BT and satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK government, have today officially signed a Distribution Partner Agreement that could result in faster low-latency backhaul and broadband solutions for businesses. Further down the line, it may also help to cover rural homes by fuelling Fixed Wireless Access.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today begun to rollout the new 700MHz band across their UK ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) network. As part of this, they’re switching on “indoor 5G” at more than 50 sites across the United Kingdom, although they fail to name even one of them.

The UK Sunderland City Council (SCC) has today announced that they’ve awarded a 20-year strategic partnership to BAI Communications, which among other things is to be tasked with designing, building and operating next generation digital infrastructure including a private 5G small cell network.

Technology giant Samsung has today revealed that UK mobile operator O2 (VMO2) will shortly become one of the first providers in the country to conduct a commercial trial of their latest 5G Massive MIMO radios, as well as 4G radios, over both low-band and mid-band spectrum frequencies. The new kit will also be OpenRAN compliant.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published the first H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities and towns of Coventry, Leeds and Bradford, Nottingham and Sheffield. EE delivered the fastest speed and availability in most of the locations, but not all.

Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has published their latest Q3 2021 study of mobile broadband (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom, which found that EE “dominated the majority of the metrics tested,” but Three UK are challenging when looking at the latest ultrafast 5G services.
