In an unsurprising development Ofcom has today published a revision of their proposed annual work plan for 2020/21, which has naturally resulted in various delays to their broadband (e.g. full fibre competition), mobile (e.g. 5G auctions) and related regulation work due to the on-going COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis.

A new study from Assembly Research, which was commissioned via the vested interests of Huawei, has forecast that the UK Government’s deployment of “gigabit-capable broadband” could provide £51.4bn gross value added to the economy in five years, growing to £68.8bn in 2030. But any delays could be very costly.

“Stupid is as stupid does,” said the great philosopher Forest Gump. In keeping with that somebody, most likely one of the “mindless” COVID-19 conspiracy theorists, has decided to burn key fixed line broadband ISP and phone cables in part of Glasgow during a pandemic, thus leaving 500 people without connectivity.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today cleared Arqiva to proceed with the proposed £2bn sale of their UK masts and rooftop sites to Cellnex (here) which, despite protests from mobile network operator Three UK, ultimately found that the deal “does not raise competition concerns.”

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has just completed another round of testing that took measurements of the electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions at various 5G mobile sites, which once again found no problems. As before the emissions remain just a “small fraction” of the levels set out in international guidelines.

A new lab test conducted by Samsung has used 800MHz of spectrum bandwidth in the mmWave band and MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) technology to push 5G mobile broadband speeds up to hit a new aggregated peak downstream rate of 8.5Gbps (Gigabits per second), albeit only over a very short distance.

The CEO of broadband and mobile giant BT, Philip Jansen, has revealed that 39 engineers have been verbally or physically assaulted – including threats to kill – over the completely bonkers conspiracy theory that links the spread of COVID-19 to 5G (11 mobile masts have also been destroyed or damaged by arson – 33 from all UK operators).

Most of us are lucky enough to live within reach of a fairly strong UK mobile broadband (3G, 4G or 5G) network signal but that isn’t true everywhere, particularly in some remote rural areas. Sometimes the best way to receive a stronger signal is to try installing your own external antenna, but knowing what to get can be tricky.

A complaint by rival mobile operator Three UK has prompted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to ban a string of adverts for EE’s 4G and 5G network, which were all found to have made “misleading” claims of being the United Kingdom’s “No.1 network“, as well as being “UNRIVALLED” and “UNBEATABLE.“

Over the past few weeks all of the major UK mobile operators (O2, Vodafone, etc.) have responded to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis by, among other things, zero rating (no charge) data usage on specific support websites (e.g. NHS). But this doesn’t always work as advertised and can still eat into your allowance.

Mobile operator Three UK has, as part of its response to the COVID-19 crisis, launched a new “unlimited” 4G or 5G “Home Broadband” plan with a monthly rolling contract option (intended to complement the previous 12 and 24 month terms). A special plan has also been launched for use by NHS workers.

Over the past couple of weeks the increasingly absurd anti-5G campaign has taken a chilling turn.
