Some customers of Three UK’s home 4G broadband service, such as those with their Huawei B535 or other mobile WiFi routers and “unlimited data“, have since the end of February 2020 been suffering from problems when connecting to and downloading content from Microsoft’s XBox Live service.

Mobile operators BT (EE), Vodafone, O2 and Three UK have today reached a final agreement on costs to support the Government’s £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) plan, which will work to extend geographic 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025. But one aspect may have been watered down.

RootMetrics has published the results from their biannual H2 2019 study of mobile broadband (3G and 4G) speeds across 16 of the United Kingdom’s most populated cities, which found that people in Birmingham received the fastest aggregate median download speeds of 28.9Mbps. Sadly last place Newcastle only scored 20.1Mbps.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has cut the price of their 4G and 5G focused SIM-Only “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) plans in half, albeit only when you take one of them on a lengthy 24 month contract term. The catch is that this discount only lasts for the first 6 months of service.

A cross-party group of MPs (select committee) has today launched a new inquiry, which will examine how “realistic” the Government’s challenging “ambition” is for ensuring that every home and business in the United Kingdom can access a “gigabit-capable broadband” service by 2025. It will also look at the role of 5G mobile.

Vodafone has invested $25m (£19.5m) into Texas-based AST & Science, which is building a new set of low latency Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites under their “SpaceMobile” project. The constellation would make it possible to connect to your Smartphone via 4G and 5G directly from LEOs in space (instantly covering poorly served areas).

Sixty homes in the tiny rural Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llanddewi Rhydderch have finally gone live on a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which has been installed by Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) and is intended to complement their existing Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial.

The mobile division of Supermarket giant Tesco (Tesco Mobile) has today become the latest operator to launch plans based off the new ultrafast 5G network technology, which is initially available in busy parts of 24 cities across the United Kingdom. Prices start from just £15 per month for a SIM Only plan.

The Leeds City Council in Yorkshire has today signed a new £20.3m partnership with BT (Openreach), which will see the latter build a new local “full fibre” network to connect hundreds of schools, NHS and other public sector sites across the city. A new fund will also be setup to support community broadband initiatives.

A team of researchers working out of the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh have developed a new type of Hybrid Flat Panel Antenna (FPA), which could deliver fast on-board WiFi internet connectivity for trains by harnessing a Satellite broadband connection instead of a mobile (4G / 5G) network for capacity.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has finally extended their range of “unlimited data” plans for 4G and 5G services to include their dedicated Mobile Broadband packages (i.e. data only SIMs, tablets, USB dongles and Mi-Fi routers). Monthly prices for the new plans start from £28 per month.

After recently publishing our fact check article on 5G (mobile broadband) health fears (here), we thought it might also be prudent to report on the results of Ofcom’s recent measurements of the electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions at related mobile sites, which found no problems. But the regulator do plan new licence conditions.

The UK Government has today announced £65m in public funding to help conduct “innovative” new R&D trials of 5G style applications and specific wireless broadband connectivity solutions, which among other things includes £30m for nine projects under the Rural Connected Communities (RCC) programme.

Mobile operator Three UK, which from the end of this month will have expanded their new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network to cover 65 new locations (here), has signed a new nationwide backhaul capacity deal to harness Cityfibre’s growing full fibre network in order to fuel their new service.

After a delay Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK) has this morning announced the launch of their 5G mobile network for Smartphone users, which will be available across busy parts of 65 new locations from the end of this month. Previously they’d only been able to launch the network on their dedicated Mobile Broadband service.

Telecoms kit maker Ericsson has announced that they’ve been able to achieve mobile broadband download speeds of 4.3Gbps by harnessing 800MHz of spectrum frequency in the millimeter Wave (mmW) bands, which was crucially achieved during interoperability testing using regular commercial solutions.

UK ISP BT (EE) has today announced that they’ve extended the availability of their new “superfast” 5G mobile network to all customers. Previously you could only get access to 5G on BT by taking one of their special “Halo” converged plans alongside a fixed broadband package.
