Mobile operator Three UK has this week discounted their 4G and future 5G based unlimited calls, texts and data (mobile broadband) SIM-Only plan for new customers to just £10 per month for the first 6 months of service (£20 thereafter). The catch is that you’ll have to take it alongside a long 24 month contract term.

Ofcom has today begun inviting applications for their new Shared Spectrum Licences, which enables small businesses to create their own local wireless networks in radio spectrum bands (ranging from 1.8GHz to 26GHz) that could previously only be used by national mobile and broadband providers.

Virgin Trains has worked with mobile operator Vodafone UK and McLaren Applied to trial a new ultrafast 5G powered onboard WiFi network for commuters travelling via their trains on the West Coast Mainline route (i.e. the trial took place between London Euston, Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly).

A new Consumer Intelligence survey of 1,068 UK SMEs, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Onecom and conducted between May and July 2019, has found that 51% of small and medium sized businesses feel the benefits of ultrafast 5G (mobile) technology are being overhyped.

Three UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the long wait for eSIM support on their 3G, 4G and 5G network may finally be coming to an end. The mobile operator plans to launch customer trials “within the next few months.” Rivals O2, EE (BT) and Vodafone have already launched eSIM, albeit with varying different levels of support.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone have launched a bunch of Black Friday offers this week, which among other things includes bundling in a ‘Google Nest Hub Max’ (usually c.£190) smart speaker device with their fixed line “superfast broadband” (FTTC) packages and discounting some of their mobile plans with Smartphones.

Back in 2017 the Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, supported by 16 operators like BT, Avanti, SES and €8.3m via the EU’s Horizon 2020 5G Research & Innovation contract, began work to integrate Satellite and future 5G Mobile networks. The project has now completed “several successful demonstrations” of the network.

The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has issued a call for evidence on its priorities for 2020 as it develops a future infrastructure plan for Wales, which among other things includes a proposal to spend a “greater proportion of public funds” on mobile (4G / 5G) rather than to fixed broadband ISP networks.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has welcomed expectations that the current UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, will today announce plans to prioritise mobile coverage, particularly in rural areas. The operator expects that the move will support the industry-led plan for a new Shared Rural Network (SRN) alongside Vodafone, EE and Three UK.

The UK Conservative Party has today published their own Manifesto for the 12th December 2019 General Election, which naturally repeats their existing pledges to cover the whole of the UK with “gigabit-capable” broadband services by 2025 and to spend £5bn on helping to reach those in the hardest to reach (final 20%) of areas.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK) has today revealed that the rollout of their new 5G mobile network is running “slightly behind” their original plan, which they suggest is due to some issues with planning permission, securing the right backhaul capacity and migration to their new cloud core network.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which started its rollout in May 2019 (here), has now gone live in a further 14 UK cities and towns. Some of the biggest locations include Liverpool, Glasgow, Guildford, Maidstone, Watford and Wolverhampton.

New data from internet speed testing giant Ookla (Speedtest.net) has shown how well early 5G mobile networks – including EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 – are performing across England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland. Overall the new mobile broadband tech is more than 450% faster than older ones, albeit not as impressive for uploads.

RootMetrics has just published their third report into the tentative early availability and mobile broadband performance of UK 5G Mobile networks, which this time focuses upon the UK capital city of London. As before EE came top for both average download speeds (149.2Mbps) and network availability (60.6%).

A new report from Global Wireless Solutions has benchmarked the 5G mobile performance of EE, Vodafone and O2 UK’s networks in London, which overall found that they were delivering download throughputs some 3-4x faster than 4G, although the latency times of 35-40ms weren’t much better than 4G and a far cry from the sub-10ms goal.

A number of data (mobile broadband) connected users on Three UK’s 4G mobile network have now reported that their connection has been assigned an IPv6 internet address, as well as the usual IPv4. At present this looks to be a limited customer field-trial, which often comes ahead of a major roll-out.

Mobile giant and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their latest quarterly results to the end of September (Q2 FY20), which revealed that they managed to add an impressive 61,000 new fixed broadband customers in the quarter (total base of 667,000) and that’s up from +31K in the previous quarter.
