Mobile operator O2 has announced that they will activate their future 5G network in June 2019 at the Millbrook Testing Ground for self-driving vehicles in Bedfordshire (England), which forms part of the £6m Government supported AutoAir project (plus £4.5m in matched private investment).

The forthcoming roll-out of new ultrafast 5G mobile networks will in some areas benefit from shorter masts being upgraded to taller ones in order to fit the new infrastructure and improve coverage. But as one example in Manchester shows, such developments have a tendency to attract complaints.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that Birmingham New Street is the first train station in the United Kingdom to be upgraded with their future 5G mobile technology as part of a live trial. Sadly a speedtest of the network struggled to get anywhere close to the often promoted Gigabit broadband speeds.

A new report from Barclays Corporate Banking has predicted that the roll-out of new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks across the United Kingdom could increase annual business revenues by between at least £8.3bn (pessimistic outlook) to £15.7bn (optimistic outlook) come 2025.

The Country Land and Business Association, which represents 30,000+ landowners (farmers and businesses) across England and Wales, has said that “forcing mobile operators to adopt rural roaming” may be the only way to deliver significantly better 4G coverage in rural areas. But operators now favour a barter system of mast sharing.

The seemingly endless debate over the use of Huawei’s kit in mobile networks has today resulted in the European Commission (EC) recommending a set of new “operational steps and measures,” which have been designed to help mobile operators to ensure a “high level of cybersecurity of 5G networks across the EU.”

Mobile operator Vodafone has warned that it would consider a legal challenge against Ofcom’s forthcoming auction of the 5G friendly radio spectrum bands at 700MHz and 3.6GHz – 3.8GH, unless the regulator changes their proposed strategy of auctioning these as part of a bundled package.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their final annual plan for 2019/20, which summarises all of the major work they intend to do this year (e.g. boosting mobile coverage, new consumer protections, implementing the 10Mbps USO for broadband and promoting investment in “fibre” networks etc.).

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has called for an “end to exclusive concessions agreements” on UK council owned street furniture, which they say has become a “barrier” to the roll-out of 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) services, not least by only granting certain companies access to use it but not others.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has rejected an industry proposal from rival operators Three UK, Vodafone and O2 that would have aimed to improve national 4G network coverage via “rural roaming,” where signals in remote areas could roam onto whatever alternative network was available (like EU roaming).

Multi-Gigabit speed Mobile Broadband has taken another step forward today after Vodafone announced a list of 19 UK cities and towns that will be the first to benefit from their commercial roll-out of 5G mobile technology in 2019, which is being fuelled by a 10Gbps capable fibre optic (backhaul) network.

The Rural Services Network (RSN) are today leading calls for the UK government to produce an “urgent comprehensive strategy for rural areas” in preparation for Brexit, which among other things demands more investment to boost the “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband roll-out and stronger mobile coverage targets.

Little has today published their new 5G Country Leadership Index, which benchmarks 40 countries by an analysis of technical infrastructure and tendency for 5G commercialisation. Overall the UK just creeps into the top ten, placing us on the border between “leaders” and “followers“.
