The Wiltshire Council in England has today announced six additional communities that can expect to receive superfast fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P) as part of their joint £35.6 Million partnership project with neighbouring South Gloucestershire Council and BT.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has told a select committee meeting that some of the recent criticism directed towards his £1.2bn scheme to improve the availability of superfast broadband has been “slightly unfair“. But he is prepared to look at the “possibilities” of BT having an unfair monopoly on related contracts.

The £45m Connecting Cambridgeshire project, which seeks to make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) speeds available to 90% of premises in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England) by the end of 2015, has added a new page to its website that should reveal more details about the expected rollout and timetable.

The Welsh Government has announced that its £4 million Broadband Support Scheme (BSS), which offered grants of up to £1,000 to help those living in rural parts of Wales where broadband connectivity remains poor (i.e. sub-2Mbps speeds), is to be replaced by an almost identical alternative.

The West Yorkshire (England) local authorities have today agreed to a new £21.96 million state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) contract with BT, which will make the operators “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 97% of local premises by the end of Autumn 2015 (the last 3% will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).
