The Government’s £2.53bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,440,086 extra premises since 2012 and the latest take-up data to March 2022 shows strong demand, with adoption in most of the original build areas now exceeding 80%.

The UK Supreme Court has today handed down three judgements related to the contentious issue of land ownership and rent reductions on mobile masts, such as those that may occur when mobile and fixed wireless broadband operators (EE, Three UK, O2 and Vodafone etc.) attempt to upgrade an existing site.

The Colchester Borough Council‘s recent multi-million pound project to build a new Dark Fibre network across the Essex town (here) appears to have also been one of the first places in the UK to deploy the Prysmian Group’s latest Sirocco HD cable, which can fit 552 fibres into a diameter of just 8.2mm.

The Building Digital UK team has today published another round of Public Reviews (PR) for the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout – this time covering West Yorkshire and Parts of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and West of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire in England.

The latest H2 2021 study into the broadband coverage of new build UK homes has found that over 96% of houses constructed during the second half of last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP network (up from 93% in H1 2021), which rises to 99%+ for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services.

The UK Government has published their ‘Digital Strategy’, which reflects a “new plan” to grow the “digital economy” (i.e. addressing tech sector skills, investment and infrastructure). But in terms of mobile and broadband infrastructure, it’s largely another re-announcement of existing schemes (not unlike the ‘Levelling Up‘ plan).

The Essex County Council in England has published a new Digital Strategy document, which among other things sets out their plans to ensure that – come 2025 – “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) will cover “all premises“, while “gigabit-capable broadband” should reach 85% and 4G becomes available to 99% (geographic).

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today published a Spring 2022 progress update for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which among other things adds new regional procurements in Norfolk and Suffolk and two local supplier procurements in Cornwall, potentially extending 1Gbps speeds to c.190,000 premises.

The Scottish Government‘s £35m subsea fibre project with Openreach (BT) and Global Marine, which aims to connect 15 remote islands around northern Scotland via 16 new fibre optic cable links – laid across the sea bed, is finally getting underway after an extensive period of engineering surveys and the build of landing sites.

The Cumbria County Council (CCC) has released an additional £2m of public investment to help keep the current Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) topped-up, which is designed to help rural homes and businesses to get an ultrafast or gigabit speed internet connection installed.

The FTTH Council Europe has today released their annual ranking of the European countries with the strongest subscriber penetration and annual growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband ISP networks. Happily, the UK continues to show exceptional growth, and has managed to leapfrog over Germany.

The status of the state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) contract with alternative broadband ISP Truespeed, which aims to cover 15,170 premises across Bath and Somerset with a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, remains in doubt after concerns were raised earlier this year over build “delays“.

The Government has announced changes that are designed to improve the quality of street works, not least through more inspections, better quality resurfacing and tougher fines for poor quality road works and leaving behind potholes. But the new rules also include changes to help support the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband.

A new survey of over 4,000 businesses in England, which was conducted by the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE), has claimed that sub-standard infrastructure in rural areas – particularly the lack of quality broadband in many parts – is making it harder for businesses to be “resilient and bounce back from adversity“.

The BT Group has published their Q4 2021/22 results to March 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow by a record 752,000 premises in the quarter (up from +662K last quarter) to total 7.2 million. The operator also signed an FTTP co-provisioning deal with Sky Broadband.

Prince Charles has today carried out the State Opening of Parliament event – formally still referred to as the “Queen’s Speech“, which sets out the UK Government’s agenda for the coming session. The speech contained no real surprises, but it did include and reiterate some bills that will impact broadband infrastructure and internet safety.

Back in January the Government’s Building Digital UK team “soft launched” a new National Rolling Open Market Review (NROMR) process for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout with a limited number of suppliers (here). Today they’ve launched another NROMR and are opening it up to more suppliers.
