Connected Nations 2021 – UK Gigabit Broadband Cover Hits 47%

Ofcom has released their Connection Nations 2021 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that the coverage of “gigabit-capable” (1Gbps+) broadband ISP networks has jumped from 27% last year to 47% now (13.7 million households). Plus, around half of UK properties are in areas where 5G mobile is available outside.

TNP Win Full Fibre WAN Contract for Service and Support in Trafford

The Welsh Government has issued a Q3 2021 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 24,515 premises (up from 20,490 in Q2) have now gained access to the operator’s 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Dorset Council Pilot’s Training Programme for UK Fibre Engineers

The Dorset Council (DCC) in England has secured £20,000 of funding from the Local Government Association’s (LGA) Digital Pathfinders programme in order to help it develop a local pilot training programme for fibre engineers, which could help to boost gigabit broadband provision in the county.

New UK Law Set to Boost Broadband Rollouts and Device Security

The UK Government has today introduced their new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI), which among other things will make it easier for broadband and mobile operators to upgrade and share infrastructure. The Herefordshire County Council (HCC) in England has issued a new proposal for how they intend to tackle the problems caused by UK ISP Gigaclear last month (here), which warned that 2,324 of the planned premises for their state aid fuelled rollout of a new gigabit broadband (FTTP) network would be too expensive to reach.

Welsh Gov Criticised for Removal of Broadband Availability Checker

Gigaclear Complete GBP21m West Oxfordshire Full Fibre Rollout

Some 16,000 extra premises across rural parts of West Oxfordshire in England can now access a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after Gigaclear completed its local project, worth £21m, in the district. The area has now also achieved almost universal (99%+) coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps).
