UK Competition Commission Stop BT Linking Broadband to Pension Payments

The Competition Commission (CC) has quietly ruled in Ofcom’s favour by preventing BT from including wholesale broadband charges into its deficit repair payments, which could have forced rival ISPs to pay tens of millions of pounds more in order to help pay down the operators £9bn pension deficit.

The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA), which represents alternative / smaller broadband ISPs, has demanded that the European Commission (EC) “take urgent action” to prevent dominant national telecoms operators (e.g. BT) from using “discriminatory conduct” against them and thus damaging their ability to compete in the new market for superfast broadband (FTTx etc.) services.

BT has pledged to make superfast broadband (FTTC) ISP speeds of up to 80Mbps (Megabits per second) available to over 90% of Rutland’s (England, UK) 17,000 homes and businesses by the end of 2013. Approximately 20,000 BT broadband and phone customers in the Eastbourne and neighbouring Brighton area (dial code 01323), including local schools and hospitals, have today suffered a serious loss of connectivity after a power outage struck the local Eastbourne telephone exchange this morning at around 9:39am.

Superfast Broadband Reaches 95000 Homes and Businesses in Cornwall UK

The Superfast Cornwall project has announced that superfast broadband ISP services are now available to 95,000 Cornish homes and businesses, although just 6,000+ premises have actually subscribed to the service. Thankfully new orders are being created at an average rate of 250 per week, which is up from 200 per week and 4,000 connected in February 2012.
