The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has given a more detailed comment about the likely impact on their full fibre plans of broadband rival Virgin Media (VMO2) acquiring budget UK ISP TalkTalk, which he admitted would “knock off some cream of the FTTP case” but it apparently won’t “touch the fundamentals of it at all“.

Network builders and broadband ISPs in the UK have confirmed that they’re also being affected by a shortage in optical fibre cables, which has caused significant delays to lead times on deliveries and pushed up prices of such cables by as much as 70% since March 2021. But contrary to some reports, the cable cost is not the main issue.

Residents in the large Fife (Scotland, UK) village of East Wemyss have succeeded in petitioning Openreach (BT) to remove several of its recently deployed telegraph poles. The poles were built to help bring full fibre (FTTP) broadband to the area, but locals found them “obtrusive” and feared the value of their homes might suffer.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal‘s (CAT) decision last week to reject CityFibre’s appeal against Ofcom’s approval process for Openreach’s “Equinox” price cut (here), which slashed the cost of the incumbent’s wholesale FTTP broadband products for UK ISPs, may not have been a total loss for the alternative network operator.

Good news.
