A couple of months ago we revealed that Openreach had launched a review of their FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) product for UK broadband ISPs (here), which proposed to stop selling it later this year. The conclusion of that review has just been published and FoD has been given a reprieve, at least for now.

Following last year’s successful lab tests, Nokia has brought their future 100G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology to be showcased at the “Fiber Connect” event in Nashville (USA). The new kit is capable of delivering full fibre 100Gbps speeds in downstream on a single PON wavelength in a real-world environment.

Openreach (BT) has hinted that, for the first time, new installations of their hybrid Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband ISP lines may soon start to shrink, which would partly reflect the rising coverage of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Vodafone today claims to have “overtaken” BT to become the UK’s “largest full fibre broadband provider” via their Gigafast Broadband plans, but they aren’t referring to customer figures (1 million). Instead, this reflects the fact that they now sell gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plans via both Openreach and CityFibre.

London-focused gigabit-broadband builder and UK ISP G.Network, which unexpectedly saw its founder and former CEO – Sasho Veselinski – exit last month due to “personal reasons” (here), has managed to grab the former Managing Director of Openreach’s Fibre and Network Delivery team, Kevin Murphy, to be its new CEO.

Broadband ISP Ogi has just issued a brief progress update to celebrate the first year of their £200m effort to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across South Wales (here and here), which initially aims to cover 150,000 premises by the end of 2025 (they’ve almost completed 23,000).

Imagine if your FTTC (VDSL2) broadband line was cancelled and couldn’t be re-provisioned by your ISP because “full fibre” FTTP was now the only option available. Fine. But now imagine if you tried to order FTTP and found that UK ISPs were quoting you up to £12k for installation. This could become more common.

A serious broadband outage that began in Wrexham (Wales) yesterday afternoon, which is affecting multiple ISPs and around 6,000 premises, appears to have been caused after one of Openreach’s contractors ended up cutting through their own fibre optic cable.

The Scottish Government‘s £35m subsea fibre project with Openreach (BT) and Global Marine, which aims to connect 15 remote islands around northern Scotland via 16 new fibre optic cable links – laid across the sea bed, is finally getting underway after an extensive period of engineering surveys and the build of landing sites.

More than 4,000 metres worth of Openreach’s copper telecoms and broadband cable has been ripped out of the ground in the Nottinghamshire (England) village of Harby near Lincoln, which resulted in around 200 local homes and businesses being disconnected from the operator’s local network and ISPs.

Some 1,200 customers on Openreach’s broadband and phone network in Wrexham (Wales) have been left disconnected again after the operator’s local network was hit by yet another theft of copper telecoms cable, which appears to have occurred in roughly the same area as two prior thefts earlier this month (here).

UK ISP BT recently announced that it intended to become the flagship brand for their Enterprise and Global units, while EE would focus on their consumer packages (here). The operator has today unveiled a new Charter for its 1.2 million business and public sector customers, which sets out their blueprint for a new range of initiatives and growth.

UK ISP BT has today issued their latest biannual study into the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 4,600 premises, with more than 2,300 further builds in progress.

In an unexpected move, Openreach (BT) has today added 56 new locations (towns and villages) to their £15bn rollout for a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The operator’s full fibre network has now covered 7.2 million UK premises (inc. 2.3m in the hardest to reach “final third” of the country).

Vodafone UK has today published their latest results (financial Q4 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base has finally passed the million mark to total 1,050,000 (up by +59k in the quarter vs +29k in Q3 FY22). But it’s unclear whether they’ve managed to achieve national availability across CityFibre’s FTTP network, yet.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has named Luke Picken as the winner of its ‘Engineer of the Year 2022’ award. Luke is said to have worked around the clock across South West Scotland to keep people connected to their broadband ISP and phone connections in the wake of Storm Arwen during late November 2021.

The BT Group has published their Q4 2021/22 results to March 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow by a record 752,000 premises in the quarter (up from +662K last quarter) to total 7.2 million. The operator also signed an FTTP co-provisioning deal with Sky Broadband.
