As many as 2,400 broadband ISP and phone customers on Openreach’s network in Wrexham (Wales) have suffered a serious loss of service after two separate thefts of copper telecoms cable (Metal Theft) struck several locations in the county, which both occurred over the past week.

New research from the University of Cambridge – supported by BT and Huawei – has attempted to identify the theoretical limits of Openreach’s standard UK copper broadband lines (unshielded twisted copper pairs), while harnessing up to 12GHz of spectrum. The result is faster speeds are possible, but full fibre is still the future.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced another shake-up of its branding, which in simple terms will see EE – over time – become the “flagship brand for our consumer customers” (i.e. converged broadband and mobile plans etc.) and BT become the flagship brand for their Enterprise and Global units.

Openreach will next month launch the UK ISP pilot phase of their new Single Order Transitional Access Product (SOTAP), which forms part of the withdrawal process for the old analogue copper telephone network. This will make it possible to offer a standalone ADSL broadband line, with optional phone services via VoIP etc.

In an unexpected development, Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they are currently consulting with UK broadband ISPs on a proposal that could see a “stop sell” being placed on their sometimes troublesome FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) product, which could potentially be introduced in late 2022.

One of Openreach’s senior UK broadband and phone engineers, Amjed, recently got the shock of his life while making repairs at a property in Glasgow. Upon removing one of the operator’s copper phone extension sockets from a wall, he came across a wasp’s nest. We assume he must have been investigating a buzzing sound on the line 🙂 .

Internet service provider No One, which is a residential-focused sibling of business ISP Trunk Networks (inc. Leetline), has reduced the prices on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages from networks supplied by both Openreach and CityFibre.

Openreach has this week launched a new Ethernet (Ethernet Access Direct) product – EAD Rugged 1G – into the UK market that has been designed to replace their ‘Street Access‘ service, which enables ISPs to run a dedicated 1Gbps fibre optic line to connect street furniture (bus shelters, kiosks, lamp posts, cabinets etc.).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE, which is available to broadband customers across both FTTC (VDSL2) and FTTP networks from various operators (e.g. Openreach), has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that it plans to launch a new multi-play home entertainment platform this summer via their new ‘One Box‘ TV set-top-box (STB) device.

Openreach (BT) has today also released the Tranche 8 batch of 46 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

Openreach (BT) has today added another 36 new locations (towns and villages) to their £15bn rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The operator has also confirmed that their full fibre network has now covered 7 million UK premises.

Openreach has today announced that they will soon pilot a new “Advanced Install” service for those taking one of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP products, which is designed to address situations where an installation might be more complex than usual (e.g. business and public sector users).

The Building Digital UK team has published a new Public Review (PR) consultation for Wales, which reveals that some 327,174 premises might need state aid help under the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in order to access 1Gbps speeds (rising to 984,806 if including ‘Under Review‘ premises).

The BT Group (inc. Openreach, Plusnet and EE) has today proposed to award frontline broadband and telecoms workers a £1,500 consolidated pay increase. But the Communications Workers Union, which represents c.40,000 of the operator’s UK staff, has rejected this and moved to “prepare for a statutory industrial action ballot.“

The details remain unclear, but a “suspected” arson attack against Openreach’s (BT) network infrastructure in Staplehurst (Kent, England), which we believe occurred around mid-morning yesterday, has resulted in a loss of broadband and phone connectivity for 7,400 homes and businesses in the area.
