The Founder and Chairman of UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, Richard Tang, appears to have confirmed that they will be able to connect into 100% of the locally connected on-net footprint for CityFibre by the end of this financial year (September 2022) – expanding the availability of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products.

Alternative UK network ISP People’s Fibre, which started building a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in 2020 and soon ran into some challenges with competition from rivals, has fallen into administration due to a “breakdown in the relationship” between the company’s director and investors.

Several alternative UK network (AltNets) builders, including Gigaclear and CityFibre, among others, are reportedly set to launch a legal challenge against Ofcom’s recent approval of Openreach’s “Equinox” offer (here), which introduces a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products.

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit rollout programme appears to have quietly confirmed that they now aim to deliver “full” 1Gbps broadband coverage to the final 20% of hardest to reach premises by 2030 (effectively universal coverage), at least where it is “value for money to do so.”

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE has recently discounted some of their Home Broadband packages as part of the usual Black Friday offers, which for example has seen the price of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plan on Openreach’s network fall to £49 per month for 24-months (£57 thereafter). Setup is also free.

Low-cost UK ISP TalkTalk appears to have quietly launched a new “Fibre 1Gbps” broadband service as part of their CityFibre and Openreach based Future Fibre packages, but at present it only seems to be available in Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) areas (CF areas are still limited to 500Mbps) and costs just £49.

Bristol-based UK ISP RunFibre, which are currently busy building their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of South Gloucestershire in England, has decided to complement that effort by signing a new partner plus agreement with BTWholesale.

Openreach (BT) has today officially added another 170 new towns and villages (covering 1.5 million premises) to the UK rollout plan of their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which are all the same as those we published last month (here). The news comes as they reach 6 million premises passed.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy will later this morning launch their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages, which will offer speeds of between 100Mbps and up to 900Mbps+ on Openreach’s national network (currently covering around 6 million premises).

AFL, a subsidiary of Fujikura in Japan, has today officially opened a new facility in Swindon (Wiltshire) that will become their first factory in the UK and Europe to produce a “new” type of fibre optic broadband cable, which is being used by network operators like Openreach (BT) to support their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) rollout.

Last year Openreach (BT) began consulting on their plans to close 4,600 exchanges across the United Kingdom as part of their move from copper to fibre optic based broadband ISP lines. The operator has today begun to consult on the first 5 pilot exchanges to go through this new mass-migration process.

Ofcom has today finalised the changes that were first confirmed in July to improve how BT handles delivery of the UK’s Universal Service Obligation (USO), which aims to bring faster broadband ISP speeds to those who can’t yet receive a 10Mbps+ capable download speed and aren’t planned to do so in the near future.

Openreach (BT) has informed UK ISPs about the launch of a new speed test trial for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband lines, which looks as if it will be used to help identify where on the network a speed fault actually exists (i.e. is it on Openreach’s side or not).

Yesterday’s Plenary meeting of the Welsh Parliament raised an interesting point when it highlighted the Welsh Government’s removal of the superfast broadband availability checker from their Superfast Cymru page, which makes it harder for people to know which areas will benefit from the state aid supported rollout.

Telecoms giant BT has confirmed that they’re working with the UK university sector and other utilities to develop and trial a new range of robots, which they hope could be used by Openreach and others to help speed up the rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP networks and fix them when broken.

The BT Group has published their Q2 2021/22 results, which reports that their consumer ISP division now has a total of 945,000 broadband customers on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 860K last quarter), while Openreach has grown their UK FTTP coverage to 5.78m premises (up from 5.16m). Build costs have also fallen.
