Network access provider Openreach (BT) are offering a reward of up to £20,000 – via Crimestoppers – for information that results in the conviction of those responsible for a string of copper telecoms (broadband and phone) cable thefts in Essex (England), which have recently plagued parts of Roothing, Epping and Harlow.

Ofcom has today decided to adopt the new ‘One Touch Switch‘ (OTS) process for customers of fixed line phone and broadband ISPs, which will make it easier for you to switch between providers on physically separate networks (e.g. Openreach’s full fibre to CityFibre or Virgin Media etc.). But you’ll have to wait until April 2023 to use it!

Rural broadband ISP Wildanet, which earlier this year started their £50m rollout (here) of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the Cornwall town of Liskeard (inc. surrounding areas within the PL14 postcode), has confirmed that the next town to benefit will be Callington.

Delegates at the UK Labour Party’s annual conference have passed a key motion on public ownership, which technically commits the party to nationalise the “broadband-relevant parts of BT” (Openreach) and “deliver free full-fibre broadband to all by 2030.” It also adds a new “jobs guarantee” to protect workers. Easy to say, hard to do.

Telecoms giant BT has lodged an appeal against its business rates relief “certificate” from HMRC’s (UK Government) Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which credible industry sources have told ISPreview allegedly relates to the issue of how much tax (rates) they pay on their new fibre optic broadband lines.

Openreach (BT) has now recovered after last week suffering from a serious “intermittent system failure” that impacted several of their systems, which just so happened to be “critical” for processing Ethernet / Dark Fibre provision orders and Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) requests by AltNet broadband ISPs.

The latest data update from Thinkbroadband has estimated that 50.23% of properties in the United Kingdom now have access to take a fixed gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) broadband ISP connection, which is up from 41.72% in July 2021 and largely reflects the impact from Virgin Media’s (VMO2) recent DOCSIS 3.1 upgrades.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced that they’re bringing forward their target for achieving Net Zero by 15 years (i.e. removing as many carbon emissions as they produce), moving it from 2045 to 2030 for their own operational emissions. But their supply chain and customer emissions won’t follow until 2040.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they, alongside partner Circet and others, have begun trials of a new ‘Air Wand‘ (aka – Air Sabre or Air Lance) machine, which uses compressed air or high pressure water to break the ground and could speed up the rollout of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The Welsh Government has issued a Q2 2021 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which reveals that 20,490 premises (up from 19,919 in Q1 2021 and 15,649 in Q4 2020) have now gained access to the operator’s 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Openreach (BT) has today named a further 17 new “rural” towns and villages across Northern Ireland that, over the next 18 months, will benefit from a local investment of £130m (up from the prior commitment of £100m) to help expand the reach of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

UK ISP Yayzi Broadband, which has already launched a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in Blackpool (Lancashire) by harnessing ITS Technology‘s network, has now joined CityFibre’s rival full fibre build in order to expand their local coverage, as well as being able to launch in the nearby town of Preston.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced the launch of a new “Connect the Unconnected” offer, which will make it possible for UK ISPs to waive “superfast broadband connection fees” for any customers who receive ‘Universal Credit’ with no other earnings, and who aren’t currently connected to its network.

Earlier this year the Scottish Government named 15 islands under their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project which, supported by BT (Openreach) and Global Marine, would gain access to superfast broadband ISP speeds via 16 new subsea fibre optic cable links (here). Today we have a small progress update on this.

Non-profit UK broadband provider Green ISP has just done the same as Zen Internet did last week (here) by opting to cease the sale of Openreach’s (BT) increasingly troubled hybrid fibre G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” products, which they originally launched back in 2018 (here).

The Scottish Government has today issued a progress update on their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) programme with Openreach (BT), which provides more detail on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) dominated plan for extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) across the LOT 1 area – North Scotland and the Highlands.
