Spare a moment this morning to think of the Openreach (BT or Bee Tee) engineers in West Cornwall (England) who were recently left buzzing (sorry) after opening the door of a street cabinet, which looks to be quite an old Primary Connection Point (PCP) for copper phone lines, only to find a hive of busy Bees occupying it.

Openreach (BT) this week announced the launch of a new ‘Build to the Wall‘ (BTTW) trial for UK ISPs selling their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which could increase the success rate of new provisions to homes by changing how they approach the final drop to homes.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today added three new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages – 300Mbps, 500Mbps and 900Mbps – to complement their existing 36Mbps, 75Mbps and 150Mbps tiers on the same Openreach based network platform.

UK ISP Giganet (M12 Solutions) has today announced that they’re moving to adopt short 30-day contract terms on their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services, although this only applies to those they either build themselves or sell via CityFibre’s national UK network (i.e. Openreach based products aren’t covered).

The Manchester-based British Cables Company (BCC), which is a manufacturer of various cables, has secured a key multi-million pound contract to supply Openreach with a variety of fibre optic cables to support their ongoing UK rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet services.

UK ISP Cuckoo has today announced that they’ll soon be launching their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband package(s), complete with speeds of up to 1Gbps (Gigabits per second), from October 2021. But unlike most other providers, they’ll do so on a monthly rolling contract.

Ofcom’s investigation into BT’s compliance with their obligations under the new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband has concluded that “some customers have been asked to pay materially higher amounts than they should have been.” As a result, they’ve asked the ISP to make a few improvements.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they’ve conducted the UK’s “first ever” tests of Nokia’s new next generation 25G PON technology, which has the ability to push download speeds of 25Gbps (Gigabits per second) over a single optical fibre and could one day result in faster FTTP speeds from ISPs.

The unusually named UK ISP I Need Broadband (INB) has just become the latest provider to start building their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, with their first projects reaching hundreds of homes and businesses across parts of North Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire (England).

Telecoms giant BT has today announced that they’ve managed to reach an agreement with the Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents around 40,000 of the operator’s staff (BT, Openreach and EE), in order to avoid the looming prospect of a major national strike.

The state aid supported Superfast Staffordshire project, which is working with Openreach (BT) to extend the local coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, has today announced the completion of its contract. As a result of the rollout more than 97% of local homes and businesses can now order such speeds from an ISP.

The latest independent study of UK broadband coverage for H1 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 24.33% of premises (up from 19.2% in H2 2020), while 41.72% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 37.4%) and 66.9% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 64.3%).

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast, Sky TV) has today launched a new 500Mbps “Ultrafast Plus” package for consumers, which as leaked last month (here) is based off Openreach’s 550Mbps (75Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product tier and will cost customers £45 per month.

The Scottish Government has published a final report to help summarise the achievements from one part of their £463m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland project with BT (Openreach), which overall helped 950,600 extra premises to access “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) services. A new ISP called No One, which is a residential focused off-shoot of business provider Trunk Networks (they’re also behind Leetline), has now officially launched on CityFibre’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the West Sussex seaside town of Worthing. Openreach (BT) has today unveiled a “major” change to the pricing of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products, which aims to give UK ISPs not only cheaper services but also “long-term price certainty” through a series of new commitments. But in return, providers must push FTTP wherever they can.

The UK Government will today reveal that “up to” 234,000 hard-to-reach rural homes and businesses in Wales have been identified as “in scope” to potentially receive a gigabit-capable broadband upgrade, which should come as part of the new £5bn Project Gigabit programme.
