The wholesale division of BT, which sells broadband and other services to a large number of UK providers, has recently published their pricing for Openreach’s new 550Mbps (75Mbps upload) and 1000Mbps (115Mbps upload) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) tiers. But not all ISPs appear to be happy with the proposed charges.

The BT Group’s results for Q3 2019/20 (financial) have revealed that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 4.88 million UK premises (up from 4.2m last quarter), which includes 2.156m on FTTP (up from 1.81m) and 2.725m on G.fast (up from 2.42m). But the Gov’s Huawei decision will cost £500m!

BT Wholesale‘s long running upgrade to the 21st Century Network (21CN) powered Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) platform, which began in 2004 and is the foundation for many of the modern digital IP and broadband ISP technologies on their UK network, still has 98 exchanges left to upgrade and some won’t be done until 2021.

BT Group’s latest results to the end of September 2019 (Q2 19/20 financial) confirm that Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has increased its coverage to total 4.2 million premises (up from 3.7m last quarter), which includes 1.81m on FTTP (up from 1.51m) and 2.42m on hybrid fibre G.fast (up from 2.16m).

BT Group has today published their latest results to the end of June 2019 (Q1 19/20 financial), which reveals that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP networks have grown their coverage to 1.51 million and 2.16 million UK premises respectively (overall total of 3.7m, up from 3.2m last quarter).

The launch of Openreach’s new Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA) product, which enables consumers to buy a standalone UK hybrid fibre broadband (FTTC / VDSL2 or G.fast) ISP line without the voice (phone) service, looks to be imminent as its availability status has recently been added to the BTWholesale checker service.

BT Group’s new CEO has released his first full year results to the end of March 2019 (Q4 18/19 financial), which finds that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP network has grown its coverage to 3.2 million UK premises (up from 2.6m last quarter). Take-up of FTTP is 24.54% and G.fast 1.24%.

The new CEO of UK telecoms giant BT, Philip Jansen, is reported to be considering a huge reduction in jobs that could cut another 25,000 staff from their current workforce of nearly 100,000 (i.e. 82,500 direct employees and 12,300 contractors). Such a move might help to fund their roll-out of “full fibre” broadband ISP technology.

A new report from Hatch Regeneris, which was commissioned by the BT Group, has estimated that the telecoms and broadband ISP giant generated a £22.8 billion contribution to the UK economy (expressed as GVA – Gross Value Added) during the 2017/18 financial year (down from £23.1bn in 2016).

BT Group has released their results to the end of December 2018 (Q3 – 18/19 financial), which reports that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) UK ISP network has grown its coverage from 1.97m premises passed to 2.6m in the last quarter. Take-up of FTTP is 29.9% and G.fast just 0.88%.

After some disagreement Openreach (BT) and five major retail ISPs appear to have finally reached agreement on payments as part of Ofcom’s new automatic compensation system, which from “early 2019” will require them to compensate consumers for a total loss of fixed broadband and phone connectivity.

The official BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker (only applicable to ISPs and services on Openreach’s UK network) has received another small but interesting update, which adds a couple of new rows and columns in order to display “observed speeds” for your line.

BT Group has released their latest results to the end of September 2018 (Q2 – 18/19 financial), which reveals that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) G.fast network has reached 1290000 UK premises and FTTP covers 682,000 (13,000+ to “full fibre” per week). Plus there’s £712m to boost “fibre” cover.

BT has published their latest results to the end of June (Q1 2018/19 financial), which report that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+ via FTTP and G.fast) network has reached 1.7 million UK premises. But sadly they’ve begun hiding their retail ISP customer figures.

The official BT Wholesale Broadband Checker has received a small but interesting update and is now showing the operator’s top 1000Mbps download (220Mbps upload) tier for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which Openreach are busy rolling out to 3 million UK premises.

BT has released their Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which sees them increase FTTP and Mobile infrastructure investment via an annual capex allocation of around £3.7bn (excluding BDUK) and report that 1.56 million UK premises are now covered by their G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+).

BT has announced that they’ve today merged their ‘Business and Public Sector‘ and ‘Wholesale and Ventures‘ divisons in the UK and Republic of Ireland into a single unit – BT Enterprise. The operator stated that this move would “simplify its operating model” and “strengthen accountabilities.”
