Network operator Openreach (BT) has finally started to deploy their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP network across the Cathedral City of Oxford (Oxfordshire) in England, which mostly reflects the central area covered by their main exchange.

ISPreview has uncovered that the Scottish Government (SG) have stopped their tender for a supplier to deliver on the proposed £43m (state aid) Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme in Fife, Perth and Kinross (Lot 4 – Scotland). This had been expected to help expand full fibre (FTTP) connectivity to an estimated 28,441 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT Group yesterday officially launched their new standalone ‘International’ unit to serve their multinational customers, which was previously predicted (here) to comprise over 8,000 staff and will report separately from the company’s UK business.

The UK government has today hailed the start of a new national campaign, funded by broadband giants BT and Virgin Media, which aims to help support and encourage vulnerable people in their efforts to switch from legacy phone lines to new digital (IP / VoIP based) networks before the deadline.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT has joined the new UK Government backed Fair Payment Code (FPC) and, in the process, just became the largest information technology business to achieve a Silver Award under the scheme. The FPC is overseen by the Office of the Small Business Commissioner (OSBC).

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has this morning revealed that a total of 50 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across England (9 masts), Wales (28) and Scotland (13) as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But 50 more will follow by March 2026.

A little over a year has passed since broadband and telecoms giant BT announced a 10-year project, which aimed to convert a further 2,000 of the operator’s legacy payphones and kiosks – across more than 200 UK towns and cities – into smart Street Hubs, starting this year (here). But objections by some local authorities are starting to mount.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT appears to be facing another dispute over workers pay after the Prospect union, which represents a majority of staff at management grades within the UK company, overwhelmingly rejected a “derisory” pay offer from the employer (96% of those who voted elected to reject the offer on turnout of 68%).

Ofcom has today published their 2025 study of UK broadband, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, fault repairs, compensation and install times for the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%) and Plusnet (BT) secured the highest (91%).

The BT Group has today published their biannual full year (H2 FY25) results to March 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage in H2 (up from 2.1m in H1) to cover 18.08m (4.9m in rural areas) and will accelerate its rollout by 20%. But broadband line losses to rivals hit 243k in the last quarter (up from 208k).

Business telecommunications and UK broadband ISP Spitfire has today called on Openreach (BT) to provide “much needed clarity” for service providers, and the businesses they support, on new contracts related to the looming switch-off of the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in favour of IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) services.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT is reportedly in “advanced talks” to sell its 50% stake in UK TV broadcaster TNT Sports, which was formerly known as BTSport before the operator retreated from pay TV. Existing partner Warner Bros Discovery would pick up the stake and use it to help support their plans for a new streaming service (yes.. another one, sigh).

The High Court in London has rejected an application by mobile operator EE (BT) for interim injunctive relief against satellite provider Avanti Broadband, which had “threatened to withdraw” its backhaul services – used to help supply data capacity to some of the remotest rural UK mast sites – unless the mobile operator agreed to pay a “substantially increased rate“.

Openreach has confirmed that their new 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network has now covered 90% of Northern Ireland, which is up from 87% a year ago. The operator is currently still in the process of investing another £100m to push this figure up to 97% for a total of more than 830,000 homes and businesses (here).

The Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme has awarded a £9.8m contract to BT under their Better Broadband Infill Project, which will see Openreach being tasked with rolling out a “full fibre broadband” (FTTP) ISP network to nearly 1,800 hard-to-reach sites across the Swansea Bay City Region.
