BT and Nokia in UK Trial of 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) Tech

Sometimes, less is more, or at least that’s the idea behind BT (EE) and Nokia’s latest trials of 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) technology and devices at the operator’s Adastral Park site in Ipswich (England). RedCap is a technology introduced in 3GPP Release 17 that brings 5G to devices that do not require its full capabilities.

Openreach Name 28 New UK Areas for Copper to FTTP Switch – Tranche 14

Openreach (BT) has released the next batch of 28 UK exchanges under Tranche 14 of their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” project, which reflects locations where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre broadband and can thus stop selling copper based phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product available).

Final Call as the UK BT Sport TV App to Shut Down This Week

People who are still using the BT Sport TV App have today been given a final warning about its imminent shut down, which is due to occur on the 12th October 2023. Customers who wish to keep accessing the same content (now re-branded as TNT Sports) will instead need to download the Discovery+ App.

Opensignal Name UK Best 4G and 5G Mobile Networks for H2 2023

Opensignal has published their latest biannual Mobile Network Experience Report for H2 2023, which benchmarks the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services from all four primary UK mobile operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which ones deliver the best performance. Overall, EE and Three UK seem to fair the best.

BT Wi-Fi Starts Promoting Future UK Rebrand to EE WiFi

Customers of BT’s national UK network of free and premium public WiFi hotspots, which are currently branded as BT Wi-Fi, have noted that the operator recently started to inform users that the service is shortly going to be rebranded under the EE WiFi name.

Ofcom’s 2023 report into UK fixed line home broadband ISP performance – the last one it plans to publish – has today revealed that the average (median) download speed has risen from 59.4Mbps last year to 69.4Mbps now (uploads went from 10.7Mbps to 18.4Mbps). But the gap between rural and urban areas remains.

Openreach (BT) has today named the next batch of 19 new locations to benefit from their ongoing roll-out of a new multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which together will cover around 200,000 extra premises.
