It’s no secret that BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has an ambition to launch their own mobile service in the United Kingdom and they’ve already held exploratory talks with Vodafone (here), so fresh reports today that the media giant has been discussing a similar proposition with other mobile operators will probably not come as much of a shock.

After a predictable slowdown in the second quarter Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today seen its growth improve in Q3-2014 by adding an extra +75,000 (up from +50k in Q2 and +70k in Q1) home broadband subscriptions to total 5,322,000, which has no doubt been helped by the recent spate of aggressive discounts (24 months free broadband etc.).

The war over domestic grade business broadband prices continues as BT Business have today launched their own offer, which cuts the price of their superfast “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) packages for new customers by £5 +vat per month on their 24 month contract options.

UK ISP PlusNet Business has slashed the cost of their ‘up to’ 18Mbps capable standard unlimited broadband and phone bundle to just £2.50 +vat per month for the first 12 months of service (£13 thereafter), with line rental being added on top at £10.50 per month (standard payg call charges apply).

BT Business has today announced the launch of a new service for housing associations (i.e. council style homes for those on low incomes), which among other things will allow tenants to share Internet access in order to help reduce monthly rental costs.

Manchester-based ISP Vaioni has signed a new partnership deal that will allow them to wholesale out access to the ITS Technology Group’s pure Fibre Optic network to businesses in key parts of Hammersmith and Fulham (London).

UK ISP WarwickNet has confirmed that around 100 businesses on the Binley Industrial Estate in Coventry (England) can now access their new superfast broadband network, which among other things offers leased-line speeds of up to 1Gbit/s; not to mention slower but cheaper FTTC services.

A recent study of 2,000 small firms by the United Kingdom’s Citizens Advice Bureau has revealed that, over the past 12 months, some 30% of small businesses have experienced problems with their phone and broadband services.

Cable operator Virgin Media Business has today signed a new “first of its kind” deal worth £1.2 million with Derby City Council that will help up to 150 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the city to receive an ultrafast broadband connection capable of 2000Mbps (2Gbps) and at a “fraction of the usual cost“.

The city of Portsmouth in Hampshire (England) has joined Bristol to make their local £4.7m superfast broadband Connection Vouchers available to businesses outside of the city’s boundary. The vouchers, worth between £200 and £3,000 +vat per firm, are designed to help SME businesses install a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) connection.

Both Virgin Media Business and TalkTalk Business have today launched a range of new broadband packages targeted at small and medium sized businesses, although both ISPs seems to be producing options that somewhat mirror their domestic services; albeit with only a few differences.

As expected the Government has today moved to boost the low uptake of their Connection Vouchers scheme, which offers grants worth between £200 and £3,000 to help small and medium sized businesses install a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service in any of 22 cities across the United Kingdom, by making further changes.

Gigaclear, which specialises in rolling out true 1000Mbps capable fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband services to rural communities across the United Kingdom, looks set to float its way onto the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in order to initially raise an additional £20m to help fund an even more aggressive expansion strategy.

The Independent Next Generation Networks Limited (INGNL) has hinted at plans to expand the reach of their carrier-neutral Next Generation Wholesale Access Network (NGANs) in order to deliver broadband speeds of 300Mbps (Megabits per second) to new-build town and urban developments that have been approved by the UK Government and local planning authorities.

At times Vodafone’s on-going attempts to grab a slice of the UK and or EU fixed broadband, TV and phone market can seem akin to throwing a bunch of big names around and seeing what sticks. So it’s little surprise to find that they seem to have moved from sniffing around BSkyB (Sky Broadband) to showing interest in Virgin Media’s parent, Liberty Global. Meanwhile BT continues to threaten.

In an interesting move the Bristol City Council (South West England) has decided to try and drum up more interest in the local Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme by extending its availability to businesses outside of the city’s administrative boundary. More UK cities may soon follow suit.
