EE UK Sees Home Broadband Surge to 775000 Users and 4G Tops 4.2m

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK has reported that their fixed line home broadband ISP subscribers grew by an impressive +30k in Q2-2014 (calendar) to total 775,000 customers, which is up from the +19k added during Q1-2014 and also better than the +12k in Q4-2013. Meanwhile their 4G (LTE) users grew +1.3m in the quarter to top 4.183m (way up from the +889k added in Q1).

TalkTalk UK Creep to 4.206m Broadband Users as York FTTP Plan Progresses

Budget ISP TalkTalk has revealed the latest results for Q2-2014 (calendar), which saw their broadband subscriber base grow by +10,000 in the quarter to total 4,206,000 (i.e. stable growth from +10k added in Q1). Meanwhile their planned roll-out of ultrafast FTTP broadband in the city of York is also making progress.

Low UK Uptake of Broadband Connection Vouchers Despite Tweaks

The Government’s Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme, which offers grants worth up to £3,000 to help SME businesses install a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service in 22 cities across the United Kingdom, is continuing to suffer from low uptake with only around 4% (1,500 approved applications) of the £100m fund being drawn down.

Spectrum Internet Brings 1Gbps Broadband to 70+ Businesses in Cardiff

Around 70+ businesses on the Cardiff Gate International Business Park in Wales can now gain access to top broadband speeds of 1000Mbps after Welsh ISP Spectrum Internet expanded the reach of their fibre optic network into the area by using the city’s Connection Voucher scheme, which makes this the first such park to benefit in the whole of Wales.

GEO Networks UK Acquires Digital Regions Remaining Fibre Optic Assets

GEO Networks (Zayo Group), a dedicated fibre optic solutions provider for the United Kingdom, has gobbled up around 1,000 miles worth of fibre optic cabling in South Yorkshire (England), which use to belong to the now defunct Digital Region (DRL) broadband network, for an undisclosed sum.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has today called on the Government of the United Kingdom to improve their current broadband coverage ambitions by raising the Universal Service Commitment (USC) from 2Mbps (Megabits per second) of Internet download speed to 10Mbps by 2018-2019, which would then rise again to 100Mbps+ by 2030.

UK Post Office Confirms Launch of New Mobile Network

In an unsurprising move the Post Office has confirmed that their existing fixed line broadband and phone services, which are now predominantly supplied by TalkTalk’s platform after last year’s traumatic move away from BT (here), will soon be complement by a mobile product thanks to their new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deal with EE.

UK ISP Coms to Terminate Email and Webhosting Services

Business ISP Coms, which earlier this year created some customer frustrations with its mixed attempt to merge ADSL24’s (So Purple Group) old broadband subscriber base (here) into their own operations, has this week informed many of the same users that they now plan to terminate their old email and web hosting services.

FREE WiFi Plan for Newcastle and Gateshead At Risk Over GOWEX Trouble

The new plan to roll-out a free wireless Internet (wifi hotspot) network across “scores of public areas” in Newcastle and Gateshead (North East England) could be at risk after it emerged that Spain-based GOWEX, which had been appointed to setup the new infrastructure, had falsified its accounts and filed for bankruptcy.

39 New Local Growth Deals to Improve Superfast Broadband in England

The Government has today announced an investment of £6bn to help fund the first wave of 39 new Growth Deals with businesses and local authorities across England, which among other things will also bring new money to build new homes and improve the coverage of superfast broadband services alongside the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme.

The government’s plans for Shoreditch’s Tech City have been criticised by Labour MP Meg Hillier after it was claimed that around a third of local businesses, not to mention many homes, are still without access to high-speed broadband, while the £3,000 Connection Voucher (“Super-Connected Cities“) scheme that was setup to help has been branded as a “national embarrassment“.

BT Agrees “wage stability” Pay Rise with CWU for 47,000 UK Employees

No disputes over pay this year. Telecoms giant BT and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have today agreed a new pay package that will last for the next three years (until January 2017) and see 47,000 of the operators “team members” (primary staff) receive a modest increase in pay.

City Takeover Panel Probes UK ISP Daisy Group for Investor Collusion

BT Openreach UK Raise the Price of Premium Line Rental and Boost Repairs

BTOpenreach are preparing to increase the cost of their premium wholesale line rental product, which ISPs often sell on to businesses as part of a phone or broadband bundle, from £110 +vat per year to £114 (+3.64%). It follows a similar rise in the cost of Basic Line Rental on 17th May 2014, which went from £93.32 to £96.17 (+3.05%).
