Cable operator Virgin Media Business has announced that its cable and fibre optic based broadband and communications network, which since 2011 has already helped to connect more than 2,000 schools across London (here), will now be deployed across the United Kingdom as part of a new deal that could be worth £1 billion.

Marc Watson, CEO of the BT TV Group and one of the architects behind the operator’s storm into the United Kingdom’s broadband-based Pay TV market, has announced his decision to leave the telecoms giant in pursuit of a “fresh challenge“. The announcement comes before the next round of a battle with BSkyB over ownership of TV sporting rights.

BT has today signed a multi-year agreement that will allow them to build a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform and services using EE’s 2G, 3G and 4G based network in the United Kingdom, which also means they’ll be “carefully” parting ways with their existing MVNO partner Vodafone UK.

The Chairmen of two enterprise partnerships – Buckinghamshire Business First and Oxfordshire Business First – have written an open letter to the Government and Ofcom that criticises the regulators “selective ranking” of the UK as number one in Europe for superfast broadband and calls on the country’s leaders “not to slip into complacency“.

Cardiff-based Spectrum Internet has become one of the first UK ISPs to demonstrate how the government’s £150m Urban Broadband Fund (UBF), specifically its Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme, can be used by several businesses to “collectively pool their funding together” for the roll-out of a fibre optic based 1 Gigabit capable connection.

Fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has announced that firms on the Kingston Business Park (Kingston Bagpuize) in Oxfordshire now have the ability to order an up to 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Internet service, which is a lot better than BT’s old up to 8Mbps ADSL connectivity.

The Business, Innovation and Skills Committee has called for a “wholesale review” of business rates, which are typically set by the Government’s Valuation Office Agency (VOA). In particular one of the recommendations could have a significant impact upon the taxation of NGA / fibre optic broadband networks, which might level the playing field between ISPs.

Telecoms giant BT has announced that it will create more than 1,000 new apprenticeship and graduate jobs. On top of that the operator is supporting the employer-led “Movement to Work” initiative, which aims to tackle youth unemployment by providing up to 1,500 vocational training and work experience placements over the next 18 months.

BTOpenreach has unveiled a string of “substantial price reductions” for their range of business focused Ethernet products, which includes the recently proposed plan to replace most of their Excess Construction Charges (ECC) for new Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) orders with a single connection fee of £548 +vat .

Telecoms operator EE has released its latest Q4-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base added +12k new customers in the quarter to total 726,000 (up from +10k added in Q3), while their 4G based Mobile Broadband users went from 1.2m in Q3 to 1.996m now.

Ofcom has preliminarily agreed to a proposal by BTOpenreach that could result in the operator replacing its sliding scale Excess Construction Charges (ECC), at least some of them, on their point-to-point Ethernet Access Direct products with a single setup fee of around £550 +vat.
