A new survey conducted by Samsung UK has found that 37% will choose coffee shops based on the availability of free WiFi rather the quality of the tea or coffee being served. So it’s no surprise to find that 69% of Brits work remotely from coffee shops at least twice a week. But apparently what cafes really need is.. a printer.

GEO Networks, a dedicated fibre optic solutions provider, has confirmed a 14.5km long expansion of its network into south London (Croydon), an area that appears to be rife with the growth of new businesses and related developments.

The Government’s Connection Vouchers scheme, which is part of the £150m “Super-Connected Cities” initiative to help SME businesses install superfast broadband (30Mbps+), has been criticised for low uptake in Oxford, Portsmouth and Brighton. Curiously one of the reasons given is that businesses don’t need the speeds it offers.

BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has today published the latest results for Q1-2014, which reveals that their broadband ISP platform has seen a sharp drop in growth after adding +70,000 customers in the quarter to total 5,197,000 (down from +110k in Q4 2013 and +111k in Q3 2013). But is this the shadow of free BTSport content or just a temporary blip.

Mobile operator and ISP EE UK has recorded one of its best quarters of fixed line broadband subscriber growth after it added more than +19,000 customers in Q1-2014 to total 745,000 (up from +12k in Q4-2013). Meanwhile their 4G mobile customer base grew from 1,996,000 in Q4-2013 to reach 2.9m now (+889k in the quarter).

BTOpenreach’s new FTTP on Demand (FoD) product offers the attractive potential for anybody within reach of an FTTC capable line to order a full fibre optic broadband connection, which can deliver stable speeds of 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) using Fibre-to-the-Premises technology. But have cost and confusion killed the attraction.

MS3 Networks has won provisional approval from Ofcom that would grant the operator Code Powers (making street works easier etc.) in order to help expand their independent and ultra-fast Dark Fibre optic broadband ISP network in Hull (East Yorkshire, England), which is already being used by a number of local businesses and competes with KC’s own FTTP deployment.

A new 3-year deal has been signed between Shepway District Council in Kent (England) and Maidstone-based Custodian Data Centre that will make Internet data speeds of up to 100Mbps (Megabits per second) available to businesses in the district’s main employment sites.

Cable provider Virgin Media Business has signed a new 3-year and £350k deal that will help local ISP LN Communications to deploy super-fast broadband into 8 sites across Yorkshire (England) by the end of April 2015; including Castle Howard, Darlington, Barlby, Darley, Kettleworth, Bradley, Northallerton and Stokesley.

Powys-based ISP eXwavia, which has until fairly recently been busy deploying fixed wireless broadband networks into various communities around rural Wales, appears to be facing a degree of financial uncertainty after it was confirmed that taxpayers money from the Welsh Government was being used to help support the provider.

Network infrastructure developer SSE Telecoms has confirmed that ‘Project Edge’, which will expand the reach of their up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable “enterprise-class” fibre optic network across the United Kingdom, has now added another 30 Points of Presence (PoPs) to hit its target of 54.

Mobile operator Vodafone has boosted their presence in the United Kingdom by another £100 million in order to open 150 new shops and create 1,400 new jobs, which will form part of their annual investment in networks and services that’s currently set to hit £1 billion in 2014. Telecoms operator BT might have scrapped the original UK roll-out target for their “ultra-fast” 300Mbps capable (30Mbps uploads) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology (here), but that doesn’t mean to say the deployments have stopped and now another 800 businesses in Birmingham look set to benefit.
