Customers of UK ISP Air Broadband (ZYBRE) have faced a difficult week after those connected via OFNL and CityFibre’s alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks received worrying letters from the two aforementioned suppliers, which warned them of service termination.

CityFibre has today announced the completion of their £5m “primary build” in the Cambridgeshire (England) town of March, which has extended their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 8,500 premises (around 80% of the town’s residential properties), including most businesses.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association, which represents UK alternative broadband ISP networks, has today warned Ofcom that “more than £25bn worth of investment” to improve the UK’s digital infrastructure “will be directly threatened” if Openreach is allowed to introduce new FTTP wholesale price discounts (Equinox 2).

Good news. The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed new guidance that would only allow broadband ISPs to use the terms “fibre” and “full-fibre” on their websites and in contracts “if their network uses fibre-optic cables all the way from the exchange to the home” (i.e. FTTP).

CityFibre have today confirmed that they aim to complete the expansion of their existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP network in the North Yorkshire (England) city of York, which is currently moving into the Clifton Moor, Fulford, parts of Huntington and City Centre areas, during 2024.

CityFibre has announced that they’ve started the construction phase of their £17 million project to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover “almost every home and business” in the Leicestershire (England) market town of Loughborough.

Broadband provider Giganet (Cuckoo) has today announced that they’ve launched a new full fibre (FTTP and Ethernet) package for SOHO (small office, home office) customers in the small business sector, which they said is “ideal for offices of 1-10 employees” and will be offered via both their Openreach and CityFibre networks.

Glasgow-based ISP Brillband, which at its launch last year (here) chose to quirkily describe itself as the “world’s first … app-based broadband provider“, has secured an additional £475k investment from “digital infrastructure banking experts based in Australia and Norway-based angel investors” to help expand across the UK.

Network operator CityFibre has announced that they’ve signed a key wayleave agreement (land / property access) with Silva homes, which will see them add another 5,000 homes to their full fibre (FTTP) network coverage in the Berkshire (England) town of Bracknell (they’re already investing £20m on a larger deployment there).

UK ISP Giganet has today announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service, specifically the part that is served via CityFibre’s network, has been extended again and is now also available to 360,000 premises across Scotland (Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Renfrewshire, Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh).

CityFibre has today announced that the primary build of their £24.5 million project to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the city of Inverness in Scotland has completed. Some 90% of local homes and businesses are now covered (28,000 premises).

CityFibre has announced that their £46m project to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based UK broadband ISP network across Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough in North Yorkshire has now gone live for “thousands of premises“, including in Bilton, Woodlands, Rossett Green, Pannal, Valley Gardens and New Park.

Popular business and residential broadband ISP iDNET appears to have suddenly stopped selling packages based off CityFibre’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The exact reason for this decision remains unclear, but we understand that some “admin issues” need to be “resolved” before they can return.

Ofcom has today opened an expected consultation into Openreach’s ‘Equinox 2‘ discount scheme, which will further reduce the wholesale prices of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband products for ISPs and thus consumers. But their “provisional” view is “not intervene“, which is likely to anger alternative networks (AltNets).

CityFibre has reportedly begun a new restructuring process that could result in the loss of up to 400 jobs out of their 2,000 strong workforce. The operator has blamed this on the UK’s “struggling” economy (i.e. causing rising costs for their business) and the desire to keep their rollout of full fibre gigabit broadband on track.

Vodafone UK has published their latest quarterly (Q3 FY23) results, which states that their fixed broadband ISP base saw strong growth to total 1.158 million customers (up by 47k in the quarter vs 39k in Q2 FY23), while their mobile base also grew again to total 17.802 million (up by 259k vs 321k in the previous quarter).
