The telecoms regulator has today revealed that UK broadband ISP and phone giant BT (inc. EE and Plusnet) have now refunded or credited £18m back to customers. This follows last year’s Ofcom ruling (here), which found that the provider had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.

BT (inc. Plusnet and EE) is expected to reveal a change to their existing mid-contract pricing policy, which means that new customers who sign-up for a broadband package on or after 31st July 2025 (5th August with Plusnet) will be subject to a +£4 price rise on 31st March 2026 and then +£4 again on 31st March 2027 (up from the previous £3 increase). Mobile plans will also increase, by different amounts.

Some customers of mobile operator EE (BT), as well as those on other networks who might be trying to contact them, are currently experiencing a partial service outage that is disrupting their ability to make calls (others complain they also can’t receive calls). The operator has declared this to be a priority 1 incident. The issue also seems to be impacting some landline calls.

Telecoms giant BT Group just published a short trading update to the end June 2025 (Q1 FY26), which reveals that Openreach lost another 169,000 total broadband lines to rival networks over the past quarter (down from 243k in the previous quarter). But they also saw their “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage grow to over 19 million premises (up by 1m) and take-up increased to 37% (up from 36.13%).

The SIM-Only mobile provider spusu, which holds a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement via BTWholesale to harness EE’s national 4G and 5G network, has today announced “sweeping cuts” to their international data (mobile broadband) roaming charges across 150 countries and slashing rates by at least 50% in over 100 of those.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced that their latest 5G Standalone (5GSA) mobile network will, from the end of August 2025, be able to reach over half of the entire UK population (more than 34 million people) as more than 45 new UK locations go live. The figure is up from 40% coverage in March 2025.

After much debate, the UK telecoms regulator has today agreed to reduce the total amount paid by the primary mobile network operators – EE, O2 and Vodafone / Three UK – to use the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz radio spectrum bands by around £60m per year. The bands support the use of 2G and 4G mobile (mobile broadband) services.

Broadband network benchmarking firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular internet Speedtest.net website and App, has published the results of a new Q2 2025 study that ranks European countries by their level of 5G mobile network availability. But the UK somewhat unsurprisingly comes in near the bottom with an availability level of 45.2%.

The UK Government has this morning revealed that a total of 30 publicly-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across Wales as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which recently succeeded (here) in extending geographic 4G coverage from at least one operator to 95% of the UK (aggregate).

Consumer magazine Which? has this morning named the winners of their Shoddy Awards 2025, which lists the companies that have done poorly through the year. The bad news is that broadband ISP Virgin Media was awarded a Shoddy for the third year running due to poor ratings and price rises, while EE picked up an award for its mid-contract price rises on mobile bundles.

Network benchmarking firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net website and App, have published the results of their Q1-Q2 2025 study into the video streaming performance of 5G mobile networks and awarded Vodafone the best on a score of 85.29 out of 100. But none of the operators performed particularly poorly.

Mobile operator EE has today announced that they’ve worked with the Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) to deliver “enhanced connectivity” across all three terminals at Manchester Airport. The upgrade involved the deployment of a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to boost indoor coverage and capacity.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT (EE) has published a new report from Assembly Research, which suggests that the UK is one of the hardest countries for building new mobile broadband infrastructure and has called for more reform of the planning rules (e.g. allowing taller masts). The prize, claims the report, could be to unlock up to £230bn in economic benefits by 2035.

The long-running saga of former high street mobile phone retailed Phones 4u (P4u), which fell into administration in 2014 and claimed that key mobile operators (e.g. O2, EE and Vodafone) had colluded to drive them out of business, may have finally come to an end after the Court of Appeal in London dismissed each ground of the case.

The latest progress update from Transport for London (TfL) and Boldyn Networks has revealed that they’ve now extended 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage on the London Underground and Central London to include further sections of the Piccadilly, Northern and Victoria lines. This can be harnessed by all the major mobile operators.

A new study from SignalTracker, which operates a popular Android-based mobile app for monitoring and examining mobile phone reception and performance (not available on Apple’s iOS), has named Vodafone as the best mobile operator in Central London for its balance of 4G / 5G coverage and mobile broadband speeds.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, has published their Q1-Q2 2025 (H1) study into the speed of 5G based mobile broadband networks across the United Kingdom. The results reveal that Three UK continues to hold the top spot, followed by merger partner Vodafone.
