Following last year’s successful lab tests, Nokia has brought their future 100G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology to be showcased at the “Fiber Connect” event in Nashville (USA). The new kit is capable of delivering full fibre 100Gbps speeds in downstream on a single PON wavelength in a real-world environment.

The inaugural UK Fibre Awards event was held last night, which saw various broadband ISPs and full fibre network builders across ten categories pick up awards for their achievements. Some of the winners included Giganet, which was named ‘Overall Fibre Provider of the Year‘, while G.Network scooped ‘Best Urban Fibre Provider‘.

A team of network researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan has done it again after they achieved the “world’s first” successful data transmission of 1.02 Petabits per second (Pbs) in a standard cladding diameter (0.125 mm) multi-core fibre cable over a distance of 51.7km.

A serious broadband outage that began in Wrexham (Wales) yesterday afternoon, which is affecting multiple ISPs and around 6,000 premises, appears to have been caused after one of Openreach’s contractors ended up cutting through their own fibre optic cable.

Broadband ISP Wessex Internet has boosted their existing rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in South England by securing a new contract to connect 35 public sites (schools, libraries etc.) under the ‘Gigahub Connectivity in Rural Dorset Project‘, which is supported by £900k from Dorset Council.

The FTTH Council Europe has today released their annual ranking of the European countries with the strongest subscriber penetration and annual growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband ISP networks. Happily, the UK continues to show exceptional growth, and has managed to leapfrog over Germany.

Scientists have found a way to further improve the detection of earthquakes by harnessing the unique properties of existing subsea fibre optic cables – specifically their repeaters, which straddle the ocean floors between countries and are used to carry vast amounts of data. The study used the 5,860km EXAI cable between the UK and Canada.

Two investment groups – one including Neos Networks (bidding alongside Cellnex) and the other Virgin Media (bidding alongside Nokia and Jacobs) – have reportedly been approved to bid on the £1bn auction of 10,000 miles worth of Network Rail‘s trackside cable network. The winner could use this to improve gigabit broadband and 5G cover.

The UK Government’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which is the arm’s length body at the Department of International Trade (DIT) and is tasked with investigating “unfair import practices and unforeseen surges of imports“, has opened two new investigations into imports of fibre optic cables from China.

UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has today given their business and wholesale connectivity division a boost by entering into an agreement to acquire Virtual1 for an undisclosed sum. The deal will help to grow their scale as a national provider of Ethernet (EAD / leased line) solutions and to strengthen its capabilities.
