Broadband ISP Wessex Internet has boosted their existing rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in South England by securing a new contract to connect 35 public sites (schools, libraries etc.) under the ‘Gigahub Connectivity in Rural Dorset Project‘, which is supported by £900k from Dorset Council.

The FTTH Council Europe has today released their annual ranking of the European countries with the strongest subscriber penetration and annual growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband ISP networks. Happily, the UK continues to show exceptional growth, and has managed to leapfrog over Germany.

Scientists have found a way to further improve the detection of earthquakes by harnessing the unique properties of existing subsea fibre optic cables – specifically their repeaters, which straddle the ocean floors between countries and are used to carry vast amounts of data. The study used the 5,860km EXAI cable between the UK and Canada.

Last year saw rural ISP Alncom enter into a new partnership with business provider Commsworld (here) to help support the rollout of their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Northumberland and Durham in England. The fruits of this agreement are now starting to show.

Two investment groups – one including Neos Networks (bidding alongside Cellnex) and the other Virgin Media (bidding alongside Nokia and Jacobs) – have reportedly been approved to bid on the £1bn auction of 10,000 miles worth of Network Rail‘s trackside cable network. The winner could use this to improve gigabit broadband and 5G cover.

The UK Government’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which is the arm’s length body at the Department of International Trade (DIT) and is tasked with investigating “unfair import practices and unforeseen surges of imports“, has opened two new investigations into imports of fibre optic cables from China.

The Zayo Group, which operates a large metro and long-haul fibre optic network in the UK, has completed the build of a new high-capacity Dark Fibre network at Proximity’s edge colocation data centre in Chester Gates near Manchester – they’re also nearing completion of another connection for Proximity’s Nottingham edge data centre.

The ITS Technology Group (its.) has this morning announced that they’ve secured a further investment of £100m from existing backers at Aviva Investors, which will be used to continue and “accelerate” their existing rollout of “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet services (FTTP, Leased Lines etc.) across more of the United Kingdom.

A single microscopic speck of dust – impossible to see with the human eye – could feasibly lead to a data communication failure and create performance problems for thousands of customers.

UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has today given their business and wholesale connectivity division a boost by entering into an agreement to acquire Virtual1 for an undisclosed sum. The deal will help to grow their scale as a national provider of Ethernet (EAD / leased line) solutions and to strengthen its capabilities.

The Scottish Government (SG) has announced that five more broadband network providers have committed to supporting Scotland’s Full Fibre Charter, including Borderlink, Cloudnet, Hyperoptic, Lothian Broadband and Virgin Media (VMO2). The charter consists of a series of pledges to help extend full fibre coverage.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative full fibre and fixed wireless broadband ISP networks, has warned that Openreach’s (BT) plan to close 4,600 exchanges creates a huge and costly problem for many of their rivals in the alternative network space.

Jisc, which provides network and IT services to the education sector, has once again chosen Neos Networks to deliver yet another of their new Dark Fibre networks, which will this time be used to serve their sites (e.g. Universities and Research Centres) in Northern Ireland with speeds of up to 100Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The Government’s Education Secretary, Nadhim Zahawi MP, has today made a new commitment for “every school across the country” to be able to access “high speed internet” by 2025, which is said to complement the wider £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout programme. Funding will also be provided for related WiFi upgrades.

Slovenia-headquartered ICT provider Iskratel has today announced that they’ve opened a new branch in the United Kingdom, which aims to supply those ISPs currently deploying Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband networks with various types of optical fibre kit to help complete their services.
