UK ISP Telcom has today announced that they intend to “expedite” their roll-out of a 10Gbps capable “full fibre” and broadband network to cover “hundreds of residential and commercial premises” in Manchester and the wider North West of England, although details of their exact rollout plan remain unclear.

The Chichester District Council (CDC) in West Sussex (England) has confirmed their intention to enter into a new agreement with Cityfibre, which will see the operator extend their roll-out of a new “full fibre” Ethernet and broadband network in the cathedral city in order to help it cover a further 50 public sector sites.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has confirmed that they’ve started to roll-out their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the northern city of Newcastle (Tyne and Wear), which is expected to cost £50m and is being supported by their UK ISP partner Vodafone.

Well this is an odd but interesting one. A team of VTT scientists from Finland have successfully transmitted light over a new type of wood-based optic fibre cable, which has a core that is made from cellulose and this has the added advantage of being biodegradable.

Scotland-based UK business ISP Commsworld – supported by NE1 Ltd – has announced that they intend to build a new “full fibre” and broadband network around the central NE1 postcode area within the city of Newcastle (Tyne and Wear), which will be focused upon catering for the demands of both local businesses and public sector sites.

Ofcom are consulting on a new proposal that could remove a few key pieces of regulation from Openreach (BT), which is intended to support their analogue telephone (WLR) to digital voice (VoIP) and copper to “full fibre” (FTTP) Exchange Upgrade trials (here and here) in Mildenhall (Suffolk) and Salisbury (Wiltshire) respectively

Fibre optic provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) has been picked by Jisc to help from data connectivity speeds of up to 100Gbps to education and research centres across the Midlands of England. Key universities, such as Birmingham, Warwick and Nottingham, will be among those to benefit from the new contract.

Fibre optic network builder Nextgenaccess has signed a new 20-year concession agreement with High Speed 1, which should support a track-side rail deployment of new fibre to help bring “essential ultra-fast broadband” within easy reach of Kent local authorities, ISPs, mobile operators and business communities (at no cost to taxpayer).

The latest independently modelled data has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) style broadband ISP networks – usually capable of “gigabit” (1000Mbps+) speeds – can now reach 10.01% of premises across the United Kingdom, which is up sharply from 5.47% at the very end of last year and from 8.13% at the end of June 2019.

Business broadband ISP Glide has revealed that they’ve so far issued 1,100 vouchers under the UK Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which they claim has helped to save local businesses an estimated £2,750,000 in getting a new connection installed and increasing their access speeds ninefold.

Business connectivity provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) has signed a carrier agreement to make use of a new fibre optic link from Nextgenaccess (i.e. the 60km fibre route nearing completion between Bradley Stoke in Bristol and Newport in South Wales), which will enable the UK operator to connect with a high capacity data centre.

The City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has announced a new project worth £19.2m with Swedish operator VXFIBER (including subsidiary LilaConnect), which aims to create a publicly-owned and operated, open-access and gigabit-capable, 60 mile long full fibre broadband network with “citywide” coverage by spring 2021.

The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has announced that they’ve started the build phase of their £15.1 million project to deploy a new Gigabit capable “full fibre” network, which will be used to help connect some 370 public sector sites (e.g. council buildings, hospitals etc.) across the county over the next 18 months.
