The government has today adopted new measures, as recommended by the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), to protect the UK’s growing optical fibre cables industry – worth around £88m to the economy – from unfair trading practices from China. As a result, imports will now face new anti-dumping and countervailing measures.

Network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new UK fibre-fed fixed wireless broadband network – supported by ISP 6Gi (not related to 6G mobile technology), appears close to expanding their existing roll-out into Tameside (Greater Manchester) after it applied to Oldham council for 29 poles to be installed, each 15 metres high.

Aberdeen-based UK broadband and I.T solutions provider Internet for Business (IFB) has secured a new contract worth £300,000 that will see them support and deliver the rollout of a new full fibre network in the Scottish city, which aims to bring multi-gigabit speeds to 50 key Aberdeen City Council (ACC) education locations.

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks (formerly BAI Comms) has announced that they’re working with the Greater London Authority (GLA), Virgin Media and Transport for London (TfL) to deploy a new “high-speed” full fibre network across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

Nokia’s Bell Labs research division has established two new world records in submarine optical communications. The first achieved a net data rate of 800Gbps (Gigabits per second) on a single optical wavelength at a distance of 7865km, while the second hit a net throughput of 41Tbps (Terabits) over 291 km via a C-band unrepeated transmission system.

Business and residential ISP Glide Group, which is busy expanding their full fibre broadband network across more of the UK (leased lines and FTTP etc.), has reported a surge in network demand with its data revealing a 25% increase in network volume compared to the same period last year.

The Cardiff Council (Gyngor Caerdydd) in South Wales has chosen network operator and broadband ISP Telcom (ClearFibre, WeFibre, HyperCity etc.) to supply residents and businesses across the city with “hyperfast gigabit connectivity“, focusing on the patchwork of remaining areas that are still deemed to be poorly served.

The Government has this morning announced that the UK is to join the Global Coalition on Telecommunications (GCOT) and commit £70m to the Future Telecoms UKRI Technology Missions Fund (TMF) Programme. Both of which are intended to help research and develop the next generation of telecoms, broadband and 6G networks etc.

The Zayo Group, which runs a large metro and long-haul fibre optic network that delivers global reach, has just announced that their network capacity across the United Kingdom and Europe has been “supercharged” by becoming fully 400G (Gbps) enabled. Next stop.. 800G!

Most of the daily talk on these pages is currently about UK broadband ISP packages that reach top speeds of around 1Gbps (Gigabit per second). But spare a thought for internet provider Ooredoo in Qatar, who are about to achieve somewhat of a world’s first by deploying a 50Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) plan for homes.
