Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet has announced that the rollout of its own Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband (30Mbps+) network in South Wales has now passed more than 700 homes around the Gower (Swansea) telephone exchange area and for two villages in Monmouthshire.

BTOpenreach has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the first trial of its new VDSL Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) technology in the United Kingdom, which could help ISPs to deliver better FTTC broadband speeds over longer copper lines, is now set to begin at the end of July or early August 2013.

South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and Wiltshire Council (WC) in England have today revealed which areas will be the first to benefit from their £35.6m contract with BT to roll-out superfast fibre broadband based connectivity to 95% of local premises by the end of March 2016.

BT has today signed a new state aid supported £18.06 million deal to make fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P) services available to more than 90% of premises in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire (England, UK) by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

The latest Point Topic report for Q1-2013 reveals that the total number of global broadband subscribers has grown by 2% (12.5 million) in the quarter to hit 654,600,000 (up from 643.7m in Q4-2012), which remains fairly flat but continues to be fuelled by the rollout of new superfast fibre optic (FTTH, FTTC etc.) connectivity.

Management consultancy giant Arthur D. Little has published a new paper that examines the importance of investing in better telecoms infrastructure. It also predicts that the UK might need to adopt ultrafast (100Mbps+) fibre optic FTTH broadband “over the next five years“, unless G.Fast is realised to expand the life of FTTC.
