Cable Ship “Resolute” Brings Fibre Optic Broadband to the Isles of Scilly

The £132m Superfast Cornwall project has announced that the cable ship called ‘Resolute’ will today complete the first major phase of a £3.7m effort to divert two unused submarine fibre optic cables to the Isles of Scilly (the cables had previously been used for communications between the UK, Ireland and Spain).

OECD Rank UK 8th for Fixed Broadband Penetration as Fibre Optic Grows

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which covers 34 countries that support democracy and a market economy, has reported that at the end of 2013 the United Kingdom ranked 8th for fixed line broadband penetration (i.e. 35.2 subscribers per 100 inhabitants). Fibre optic (FTTH/P/B) connections also continued to grow.

TalkTalk UK Creep to 4.206m Broadband Users as York FTTP Plan Progresses

Budget ISP TalkTalk has revealed the latest results for Q2-2014 (calendar), which saw their broadband subscriber base grow by +10,000 in the quarter to total 4,206,000 (i.e. stable growth from +10k added in Q1). Meanwhile their planned roll-out of ultrafast FTTP broadband in the city of York is also making progress.

Consumers hoping to benefit from cheaper migration fees (reduced from £50 to £11 +vat) between FTTC superfast broadband ISPs on BT’s national UK telecoms network will need to wait a little longer before they can benefit after BTOpenreach corrected the start date to 31st July 2014.

The £40m+ Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England, which has so far helped 36,000 extra local premises to access BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network and aims to extend coverage out to 90% of the county by the end of 2015 (note: 85% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) and around 95% by 2017, has tentatively confirmed its next phase 4 roll-out areas.

The Labour-led Telford and Wrekin council in England, which two years ago dropped out of the £24.6m Connecting Shropshire project that was setup with BT to improve local broadband connectivity, are preparing to put a £2m funding request into the related Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme to help 96% of premises gain access to superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds.

The South Yorkshire (England) councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield appear to have progressed a proposal to roll-out superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity across the region by matching an investment offer of £10.4 million from the Broadband Delivery UK programme, which will help to replace the defunct Digital Region network. BT is set to supply.

Telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent appears, perhaps to the dismay of fibre optic campaigners, to have given the traditional copper telephone line a new lease of life after its Bell Labs research division claimed to set a new world record by delivering “ultra-broadband” speeds of 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) over the aging infrastructure using a prototype technology called XG-FAST (G.fast2?).

The Cumbria County Council and BT have finally given a full 7-digit postcode level breakdown (albeit in verbal form) of their anticipated superfast broadband (FTTC/P) coverage in the region, although unfortunately the data is only for the Grasmere telephone exchange area.

UPDATE West Yorkshire Name Phase 2 Rollout for BT Fibre Broadband

The £21.96m Superfast West Yorkshire project in England, which is working to roll-out BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to cover 97% of local homes and businesses (708,000 premises) by the end of Autumn 2015, has started the second phase of its local deployment. There’s also some good news for Exchange Only Lines (EOL).
